Just a few days ago, Java2SE version 1.4 was released by Sun. Overview page, download page and change log/incompatibilities here. Furthermore, an interesting editorial at ZDNews titled “The convergence of .NET and Java” can be found here.
For me, it comes down to price and quality. When measuring a decent C# editor/debugger/compiler for $1000.00+ or a decent Java editor/debugger/compiler for free, I just have to go with the one that most minimizes my overhead.
Java and C# both do the same types of things. They both have strong points and they both have weaknesses. When it comes down to it, who cares if you use a Craftsman hammer or a Stanley hammer, as long as the nail goes in?
“Any convergence of any kind, in either direction, probably favors Microsoft. Because Java is the established incumbent, any activity, whatsoever, is a net positive for the challenger.”
This is true but the industry may lose as well because .Net is bound to be an exclusive Microsoft product for sometimes. As it evolves, it may remain that way permanently. It is abundantly clear that .Net is designed to kill Java and Sun and win web supremacy for Microsoft and Winblows.
I hope it does not happen! J2SE and J2EE are good for the industry without a 100lbs gorilla bullying in.

If you don’t want to pay $1000 for C# why don’t you get the free NET SDK?
