yellowTAB has announced that they are expanding internationally. They will be opening offices in Canada and Italy, in order to reach users and markets around the world. yellowTAB North America will be opening it’s own store, Zelect.com. In other yellowTAB news, recently an educational edition of Zeta RC2 was released.
This seems to me over-hyped news. The address of the Italian “office” simply corresponds to the home address of a member of the Italian BUG…
Their store doesn’t even run using SSL, submit all my information to a non-SSL URL? I don’t think so.
“My mouse also worked correctly. I do not have a 3 button mouse. I have a 2 button Logitech optical mouse with scroll wheel. So far, it works flawlessly.”
I have such mouse too. All mouses with 2 buttons and a scroll wheel i’ve seen are in fact 3-button mouses with the scroll sheel beeing pushable; which makes it the 3rd button and the scroll wheel, in 1. Therefore, 3-button emulation is not _necessary_, though if one insists…
@ Shawn. Have you mailed them with your complaint about that?
I don’t see whats up with all the yellowtab bashing, their atleast the only provider who is building onto the BeOS Legacy- and they are trying hard. Zeta IS an updated BeOS and uses the same code. It’s the only thing of its kind. OpenBeOS will gain popularity and additional features or what not will likely be incorporated into Zeta due to OpenBeOS under the MIT License..
I, personally would use OpenBeOS if it wasnt in such early stages. One commercial OS that also is freeware is SkyOS. Watch that os! I’ve talked to several coders of that system, its rapidly expanding and more and more applications are being ported to it. A Hobby OS turned professional. Expect great things from SkyOS btw. Anyway, It’s a little off topic but I’m really excited about that. To me it seems they have made more progress than YellowTab… I dont understand why yT sells Beta releases and distributes Zeta with some half-@$$ed work. Then again, It’s beta but I wouldnt pay money for it until I see a solid release. I have confidence that Zeta will improve. I think they should adopt a pricing model like Be, Inc. had. I’m not too fond of the yT website either nor the greek “z” as a logo.
I am not sure why the company is expanding already. Wouldn’t you want to worry about actually having a finished product first?
Well, it’s not really expanding in that way. It’s not like they are setting up offices with 60+ people all over the world. They just have a few people to represent it in some other countries, nothing big.
Who will buy a product from a company that doesn’t have the power (legally) to fix important issues in the core of the product? how much is that for support?
Perhaps they are allowed to distribute the product with minor modifications, but they can’t devlop it further. And add to that, that they are pretty much messing up a system that works great allready, focusing on developing unneeded installer apps while there are much greater issues.
Also, the company has a large mouth leader which has lost the respect from many many people by saying too much and sometimes too little.
Sure, I love the fact that a company tries to make BeOS more usable. But then again, microsoft tries to make an OS that is supposed to be good, still I don’t like it nor Microsoft as a company.
yT is most likely to go under. It can’t survive with only the community support, and even the community support seems to fade away.
And yes, SkyOS is looking promising. If only someone would port the BeOS API to it, then I’d switch any day. It needs a filemanager like Tracker.
yT is trying to revive an OS that has lost it’s steam, since being mishandled to death by the original company. It is akin to someone trying to revive Atari from the oblivion it fell into. Sure “Atari” (i.e. Infogrames renamed) is back, but is it the same Atari we all knew and loved back in the day? No.
“BeOS” is back, but now named Zeta. But, is it really worth it? OpenBeOS is taking it’s sweet time getting here and, meanwhile, people find less and less reason to use this once awesome OS in *any* form. It seems like people are more interested in picking out the yummies (features) and discarding the chaff (the BeOS name and history), leaving little more than memories in it’s stead.
BeOS, as I see it, had it’s chance. And it’s chance, via misdirection by the great and mighty (yeah, right!) Jean-Louis Gassee, was utterly destroyed.
We can not undo the past. We can only attempt to revive the phoenix. Will that ever happen? One can only hope…
But, for now, we have MacOS X 10.3 Panther to keep me happy!
Luposian
You could sell snow to eskimos if you just name it Atari. Who wouldn’t want to use that name?

While BeOS has lost one of it’s strong points for regular users, stability that is, it’s still an awesome OS in many ways. And the more I use Windows and Linux the more reasons I get to want to use BeOS. But the lack of applications still prevents me from doing everything in BeOS.
I don’t consider BeOS dated yet. Perhaps in a few years, but not yet.
It seems like people are more interested in picking out the yummies (features) and discarding the chaff (the BeOS name and history), leaving little more than memories in it’s stead.
That’s because it’s easier to do so. Implementing the allready available OpenBeOS filesystem in SkyOS for example is a nobrainer compared to finishing the app_server for openbeos.
BeOS, as I see it, had it’s chance.
As I see it, BeOS never had its chance. Be had theirs though, and they blew it by their focus shift.
But, for now, we have MacOS X 10.3 Panther to keep me happy!
You have it, all of us don’t. Most of us still find it more expensive to switch to mac than to keep our existing x86 hardware and upgrade it part by part once in a while.
“As I see it, BeOS never had its chance. Be had theirs though, and they blew it by their focus shift.”
The focus shift was a reaction to the fact that Be, Inc. couldn’t get any deals to put BeOS preinstalled on computers sold by OEMs due to the licensing agreement OEMs had with Microsoft. I believe Be was in talks with Dell to preload BeOS on some of their computers until Microsoft “reminded” them of the licensing agreement they had with them. Jean-Louis Gassee was pretty much forced to shift focus to try and save the company. This is the reason Be sued Microsoft and settled out of court. Microsoft doesn’t settle out of court very often and probably thought they would have lost this case.
> Microsoft doesn’t settle out of court very often and probably thought they would have lost this case.
In France for what it’s worth Microsoft would have been considered guilty. It’s so lame settling off the tribunal and pay so many millions and still denying everything !
And it’s so coward by Be not to have been through… I thought someone would have the guts for once. :-(((
In their defense, Be has a responiblity to its shareholders not to you and I. I also wished they would have went to court. I don’t think all is lost on breaking Microsoft’s hold on the desktop. I am starting to see cracks in the armor. IBM is starting to advertise Linux on TV now. I know these ads are not targeted toward home desktop users, but it exposes people to alternatives to Windows.
Any plans to open up offices in Australia?
amongst the peolpe who signed up for their news letter – lol. Then again, where else wloud they look..?! Doesn’t seem very pro to ask world + dog on their e-mail list whether they’d like to become a distributor. I see this in line with the over-hyped home-address comment from above.
is for yT to develop a Zeta dealer program, whereby we all become local offices. A few more commercial apps would be nice to sell, as well.
That’s sort of how it once was in the Amiga world, anyway.
BeDoper changes name to BeShunned

These guys better have their papers in order, isn’t their legal situation “a bit muddy”?, a hacked BeOS selling widespread in the US for $119??? Nuts. The copyright infringements seems to be all over the place. They have crossed the line opening an office in the States.
Is what you are, m.
