MacMinute reports that Cocoatech today released Path Finder 3.1 (our review), an update to its Mac OS X file browser and integrated file utility. Version 3.1 extends and improves Mac OS 10.3 Panther integration, adds some new tools, and improves existing features, preferences, and performance. This is a free upgrade for existing Path Finder 3.0 users. On other Mac releases Apple updated its Apple Remote Desktop and released a new firmware for the G5 machines.

I want to love it, but the speed is preventing me for using it all the time. Finder, although crap application, is still much faster (and takes a lot less resources). Path Finder has got millions of new features but they all seem kind of overwhelming for a file browser. I have always been kind of guy that puts simplicity over anything else (that’s why I’ve chosen UNIX – small apps that do one thing and do that well).
Unfortunately I’m still yet to acquire Panther. However, I’d love to move to a file manager that provides kqueue integration, and is able to display the filesystem state consistently regardless of how it’s altered, and furthermore do things like alter the displayed sizes of files as they change.
I checked the Path Finder but this feature is not implemented yet, there is a hack for it though. There is a time interval for checking for new files and folders. I created new file in terminal and approx. 1 second later the file was shown in the PF window. Ugly hack, but better than Finder still.
Not only should remote desktop be free, since it is on windows but you should have a windows and linux client/server as well. Or better yet, license Citrix.
Remote desktop is only free on XP pro, it doesn’t come with home at all.
Try VNC its free and works on most platforms.

VNC is great if only it was a little faster…
I tried path finder, and at first I was impressed with all the additional features, but the more i kept using it the more it felt like a cheap hack. The beauty of apple’s finder is its simplicity.
with that said, there was one thing i noticed about path finder that i want in apple’s finder, which is the alternating row colors (i love this feature.. makes it so much easier to follow rows).

I had to take a double take when I read that. Are you using a pajoritive term to describe OS X’s finder?
You may prefer something else, but what would compell you (assuming i read your comment correctly) to describe the finder the way you did.
OS X’s finder is wonderful.
