Or, gasp! the Hobbit prototypes which preceded the PPC BeBox.” In the second photo you can also see sitting Marco Nellisen (SoundPlay author, Palm engineer now) and behind him, Arve Hjonnevag (ex-Be kernel engineer, at Palm now too). In the meantime, BeUnited, after was rejected a license from Palm, they now state that they will focus on supporting Open BeOS, while Palm, Inc. revealed some information about PalmOS 5: “Three significant improvements include the ability to use multitasking and multithreading in applications, improved performance using OS 5 with the faster processor, and compatibility with current applications.” However, not all Palm developers are happy because: “Some of the old programs will run faster, some will run slower, and some won’t run at all.”

Ok.. one annoyance from the PCWorld article regarding PalmOS 5.

Yes, this was a hack prior to PalmOS 3.5. With 3.5, that functionality was built-in. Besides, hacks are true to their name. It’s pathetic to think that some people expect their hacks won’t work with a new OS running on a brand new CPU.

Well though Be Inc. is offically dead, BeOS can move on to greener pastures with new caretakers (not the Palm owned BeOS) but the new OS being built as we speak by the OpenBeOS group. There is alot of work ahead and alot of enthusiasm thus far since the ‘NO’ decision that Palm gave BeUnited. So hopefully in the near future Eugenia will be posting nothing but good news about the next generation BeOS called OBOS, or even BlueOS if those guys keep going with it. No matter what the BeOS community is in good hands and as long as you can be patient, they’ll deliver. Until then enjoy the BeBits apps churning away and keep BeOS 5 alive. Helk if people can still run Windows 95/Mac OS ‘System 7’ without much complaint (like my mother), you guys (including me, of course my BeBox is 3000 miles away) can compute on for another year. ‘Inferno’ is due out soon and other such apps, might as well give them a try. I am personally excited about ‘Inferno’ getting done myself!

I guess advanced multimedia (audio, video etc…) has not really been the force behind selling handhelds these days, perhaps in the long run. I think networking and security will Be key in the near future.

Emulation is sort of nice but is it really necessary? Why not run the old apps on the old devices until they are ported to the new environment. I ain’t replacing my M505 anytime soon, let someone else workout the bugs.

Look up dead in the dictionary, I don’t think any of the definitions relate to BeOS. People still use it, so why don’t you stfu.
I used to come here for news about all different kinds of OSes, but apparently it’s now just the Whine About BeOS site. BeOS has essentially been unsupported for what, at least a year? R5 was them saying “We don’t care about end users anymore, we’re making an appliance system!”
People still use Atari STs but that doesn’t mean it’s under anything resembling active development. A few followers still use it because it’s cool to tinker with, but they don’t have any illusions that it’ll magically come back into vogue. It’s a *dead* platform. If it comes back, it won’t be the same thing, it’ll be merged into Palm’s new OS strategy, which happens to be on a plaform BeOS never existed on…
Will you people shut up already? It’s interesting to read about what Palm’s doing, they’re working on a major shift to a new hardware platform (Gasp! Could it be… OS… News?) — why does the discussion always devolve to this? Do they talk about VMS constantly on NT boards?

Actually, it sort of is under active development. Milan and another hardware company (don’t remember the name) are making hardware, you’ve got the MagiC OS, and now there’s something called xTOS that’s in the works which, from my understanding, is trying to move the Falcon over to PPC.

NT might have been designed around the concept of VMS, but there is a major difference in the reliability factor… VMS is! NT isn’t!!

Wow, Cubase runs in BeOS? Does it run all the VST instruments? What about Reason and ReWire ?
The problem to me seems to be that Be decided that computers that sit on desks are lame, that was why they started moving to BeIA in the first place. I think we’re going to see some really cool stuff come out of Palm when the product is ready, but until then you can mourn the loss all you want, and you can support the openbe project but it is really time to move on. Be got kicked out of the ppc market because steve decided he didn’t want to share, they could have waited around to be either bought or killed by MS or they could move to a market that isn’t already dominated by any one OS yet and thrive.
i don’t think beos is dead, i just think it will only run on the computer in my pocket vs the one on my desk.

Palm is offering ‘support’ to OpenBeOS in some form? Like what? Technical assistance, code assistance? Moral support? If the latter’s the case, Palm may just as well ignore the project entirely.

To Sick Of BeOS Posts, I just checked. OSNews has 15 articles showing on my browser and only two of them are related to BeOS. It seem clear that there is lots to read about non-BeOS systems if that is what you want.
He’s talking about reader base. The reader base is basically a bunch of people still trying to support the dead BeOS.
