Red Hat, Inc. announced today the availability of Red Hat Linux 7.2 for the Intel Itanium 64-bit CPU. The release features the Red Hat Linux 7.2 operating system with the 2.4 kernel and ext3 journaling file system. This configuration supports the very large address space of Itanium-based systems and scales efficiently to eight or more Itanium processors running as a single system image. A more complete set of configuration tools and security enhancements are also available in this new release.
At http://www.redhat.com/software/linux/7-2_itanium.html“>$495 its definatly not cheap but far cheaper than Win2k Advanced server ($2600 USD OEM edition from Dell)
Interestingly Dell defaults their only itanium offering I could see on their website, the Poweredge 7150, to “Red Hat Linux 64 bit”. Also they now make it explicit on their pages the exact costs/savings of each version of windows vs linux.
The Itanium is the next *REAL* upgrade.
Intel can put out newer versions of the pentium pro for
the next decade and I wouldn’t bother until I see a
lower power version of the Itanium arrive in a consumer desktop.
Has anyone checked out the Itanium based HP systems?
$495 for Redhat is great, it’s the Itanium system price that’s
going to kill your budget.
it may be $495 dollars to buy the boxed set but you can download it for free off http://ftp.redhat.com or any of there mirrors
I think it’s swell that free software offers you the source, even those corporate purchasers who only pay $495 instead of the thousands other software would cost. No tricks, just treats.
