“I finally received the Mad Hatter Preview in the mail this weekend. I couldn’t wait to get this demo out and actually test the software, hoping that this would answer some questions that I had about the product. I was somewhat surprised to find a Live CD version of Mad Hatter instead of an actual beta, but that’s okay, I could still see what it was, even if I cannot truly install it. The truly nice thing about Live CD’s is that they don’t require that much space to get the flavor of the system. In other words, you really do not make any significant changes to an existing machine.” Read the review at LinuxVoodoo.
Is there a downloadable iso available?
Even a livecd that can’t be installed to disk would do.
the guys is talking about how his wife liked it & how he lost cable connection for half of the documents. he haven’t even compared its features with other linux distros…………….
This “review” was pretty bad. No screenshots showing any of the new apps that Sun’s tossed in. The stuff about his wife. Etc etc. I lost interest about mid-page.
only error 403 on the whole server….
“This “review” was pretty bad.”
At least you got to read the “review”. The link has been broken for me from the moment it was posted 😐
The author spends half of his time ranting about all the reasons he hates Microsoft. He doesn’t go into detail about any of the custom Java apps that set this distro apart from any other. He does state several times that Mad Hatter is well put together, but he doesn’t give any real details to back it up.
The link works fine for me. If you’re having trouble, just go to http://www.linuxvoodoo.com and look for the link on the main page. It’s in a sidebar column titled “The Orange Crate”.
There are some nice things about the LIVE DEMO CD… but if you have used SUSE – you aren’t far from the truth.
I believe that SUN’s version incorporates UNITED LINUX which uses YAST and YAST2 for administration.
It was OK, but when I needed to tweak a setting and ran the system into INIT 1 and then INIT 5, it brought me up to FVVM session (which is crap). So I could only reboot.
Very nice interface – GNOME – and there is some eye candy. Shows some promise, but for now I think I will stick with my SUSE 8.2 (and 9.0 on the horizon).

Why would any company want to become beholden to Sun? Is there any guarantee Sun will keep making their Hatter for Intel? Or will Sun do what they did before and cancel work on Intel?
The market has shown a clear preference to stay away from hardware companies who think they are software companies.
It would been a lot nicer if screenshots were included in the review.
first off, i dont know if the author of this “review” had the problem i did but, the grab screenshot functionallity of the gnome desktop didn’t work for me. as far as the review goes, you don’t need screenshots, it’s just suse, with some 3rd party apps (realplayer, flashplugin, staroffice, etc) a java multimedia player and a sun gnome theme. THATS IT!!!! There is nothing ground breaking or earth shattering here. I was thinking it would hopefully be well worked sun product like solaris, java, or netbeans. I instead was dissapointed.
A secure debian distro will suffice for corporates in this M$ world.
“Why would any company want to become beholden to Sun?”
Because, perhaps to your surprise, JDS doesn’t lock anyone into Sun. It’s a polished Linux distribution with StarOffice and other bundled apps. This provides a clear and obvious migration path for any company that wants to shift away from Sun, if they need to. Simply, Sun is making choosing Sun easy and low-risk for 50 to 100 dollars per year for support.
No one ever answered my question the last time I asked this, so I’ll ask again:
What ever happened to Sun’s JavaOS that they were making a few years ago, that would have run on Sun’s on workstations…?!
