Today is the second anniversary of OSNews’ renaissance. Though OSNews started in Autumn of 1997, there was a long period in which it was in deep-freeze, with only occasional updates. August 2001 bought daily updates, a new back-end, and a lot of new readers, thanks to our new Editor-in-Chief (Eugenia). Since that time we’ve had:
- 4,247 news postings
- 244 Feature Articles
- 82 Editorials
- 94 Interviews
- 1001 Flamewars
Thanks for reading, and keep coming back!
Congratulations to all of you…and keep up the good work
this is probably my favorite website, especially because it’s got sucha mix of articles, linux, windows, apple, hardware, everything is here ;0
good job!
Thanks for for the greatest OS news site, and my startpage for over a year now!
Thanks for all the 1001 flamewars… Trolls… We wouldn’t have made it without you!
Looking forward to the continue! Keep up the good work!
Well done! OSNews probably has one of the highest reader retention rates I’ve ever seen!
1001 Flamewars, eh?
EUGENIA ROCKS!
May I ask how many paid memebers in here?
Congrats to all of you– and to us of course (the readers also matter!)
1001 flame wars, ey? Nice to know I helped initiate one or two! )
Anybody know how many of those were posted by Eugenia?
The whole time I have been reading this site and its forums (admittedly only for around seven or eight months) I have seen what I considered to be MANY MANY flamewars, usually regarding SCO and Mac articles (and everyone probably knows the <sarcasm>awesome</sarcasm> trolls that frequent those stories).
But I am curious, what does it take to be officially considered a flamewar?
A certain number of moderated down comments?
A certain number of posts?
A certain number of posts going back and forth between specific individuals?
With all that being said, I still enjoy reading these forums and the site a lot and think OSNews is an entertaining website and think Eugenia does a good job (even though I felt she was a little unprofessional on the thread about paying for an advert-less website when someone dissed her HTML coding, hopefully this comment won’t start another flamewar ).
Anyway, just curious about the specific qualifications for a flamewar? (whew that was long)
Congratulations on continuing to provide a magnifficent service, keeping the tech industry informed of software developments daily for the past two years.
Raises a Glass.
Cheers,
bbyybb.
Kudos to you all for the fine work.
The flamewars number was just a guess ๐ And there are less than 100 members so far, BTW. http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=3878“>Sign .

Congradulations, Eugenia, David, and all the editors and special contributors out there on having put together such a marvellous site!
Yours truly,
Jeffrey Boulier
Love you for making souch a good site.. !!
What would be great is threaded comments, so that replies are attached to the comment they’re replying to. Just a thought…
Well done everyone.
“What would be great is threaded comments, so that replies are attached to the comment they’re replying to. Just a thought…”
I think that would become a problem when replying to different posts though.
Maybe a “switch to” button will do the trick?
OSNews has, and especially now does stand for unbiased, quality operating system (and other important) news.
1001? Go to hell, asshole.
1002.
Seriously, congrats to everyone! Especially poor Eugenia, and anyone doing thankless background work we don’t know about. This site certainly has a personality.
“The flamewars number was just a guess :-)”
Come on, I was hoping for a more imaginative answer than that
… and a partridge in a pear tree !!!
I want cake damnit ! now !
Where are the adult drinks too ???????! !!!
hopefully will be better. happy anniversary. –: )
and thanks for keeping me up to date with things I love.
1001 Flamewars?
How about 1002 off-topic posts
eg. Title=”SCO Vs IBM”
anonymous poster=”Hello I am having a problem installing…”
:B Anyway thanks for the news, interviews (my favourite), etc.
and yes EUGENIA ROCKS as someone else put it.
Congrats on making such a top notch site, and community. I really appreciate all the work you guys have done.
It would actually be funny reading the comments page, if you ever get the opportunity to interview Bill Gates. The poor guy.
This is my favorite Windows-centric news site on the entire net! If only there were less Linux and Mac zealots here. Windows all the way baby (and btw last time I had a crash was Windows 95).
This is my best source of informations! Congratulations!

congratulations from buenos aires!!!!!!!1
this site is in the top 10 of the net!
Congrats of course. Keep up the good work Eugenia. Many people do appreciate this site as one of the most objective OS news sites around, despite what you may read occasionally in the forums.
This is my start page!
I too like this website, but ther eis one thing constantly annoying me, the crappy forums! Any, cahnce they will be upgraded soon?
compare newMobileComputing’s (OSNEWS, sister site) forums: http://www.nmcx.com/forum/
to our forums http://osnews.com/phorum/
Phorum? You can tell its bad just by the cheesy name!
Thank you guys and especially Eugenia for bringing us the best news of OS. This site is my favorite website!
Hope the best for you guys.
Congratulation to you all!
Congratulations, and many more. A big thank you to all of you who make this site the great resource it is.
Congratulations.
Great work, keep it up!
Happy Anniversary OSNews!! It’s really great to see a site like this age gracefully. One of the first site I visit everytime I surf the web. Keep up the good works and may you have more successful years ahead of you!!
Ah well, congratulations, and were are the door prizes?
To be honest i have no clue how i came to this site but im glad that i did because it’s one of the sites i visit everyday. Sometimes this site has articles up before slashdot does.
I love how i can read up on whats happening on the major os’s all on this one page. I can read up on a microsoft security flaw then go to a “Sco vs IBM” article and read up on how good apple is doing. This site is really unique. Thanks for everything!
Keep up the great work!
OSNews is one of a few select website I visit at least once daily coming in the office and once again before I leave at night. My sincere appreciation to the entire staff and family of the staff, which I’m sure have to suffer once in a while too
Long life to osnews! Hoping to see user moderated comments soon (10 diff IP rating down the comment would hide it).
…and thanks for all the fish.
Great Site! Incredible diversity in your news links, and in the posters’ opinions!
There is nothing wrong w/ the forums here. I actually prefer the one here to the cookie-cutter one you linked to. There is just something about those style boards that I don’t like. I know its made by a third party, but for goodness sakes, at least change the graphics and colors so it doesn’t look like every other board on the web.
The only beef I have w/ the forum here is that there is no nesting of comments, but its not really big enough to justify that.
Come on dave, we all know you refresh osnews every hour on the hour.
OSNews ROCKS! I have a tab open for it almost 100% of the time. The variety in articles is awesome, and they keep getting better.
Only suggestion: less “Jimmy’s review of RedHat X.Y” articles.
Eugenia is one of the main resons I come to OSNews, without Eugenia OSNews would not be OSNews.
I’m a paid subscriber here, and I enjoyed my time until one of my posts was deleted. No, not moderated down, but outright deleted. Since then, I haven’t been coming as often, and I doubt I’ll renew my subscription.
Regardless, I know others enjoy the site, so good show.
Great site, always a good job with interesting and varied topics.

If it got deleted you were probably trying to start some crap, just because you are a paid subscriber doesnt mean you can come to OSNews and post anything socially unacceptable, it must have been really bad to be deleted. I have been modded down several times but never deleted.
Post a new comment.
Thanks, GREAT SITE.
… and I meant that as a troll OK?
(That was also meant as a joke)
Keep it rollin’
Great site. Eugenia is a very balanced editor and a huge asset to this site. Keep up the good work. This is the first page I come to now.
Congratulations for your good job keeping us always inside
of the news of computer world.
Keep up this good work.
Free software RULES
ยญthanks to our new Editor-in-Chief (Eugenia)
You’re back full time?
k0ngr@ul4t10n5 05 n3w5!
There have been some posts that were deleted that should not have been, and moderators have been chastized. But we will delete posts that are intentionally offensive (contain racial slurs, off-topic profanity, etc). Occasionally an editor has become so fed up with a particular topic that’s generating a lot of trolling/flaming we’ve just deleted all the comments. If you ever feel that you have been dealt with unfairly on the forums, please contact me.
.
thanks for a website that i read every day. it is great to see so many differing viewpoints. eugenia you do a fantastic job!

Congratulations, I like this website. I hope to enjoy it very many years to come.
This is one of three sites I check daily (slashdot and the bbc). Keep up the good work.

25% are flamewars! ๐ Operating Systems are becoming like idols! ๐ When they are to be a handful set of good tools.
well done to Eugenia and David

Congratulations, u have done a great job. Keep going!
Lets start it right here :-))
I (and no doubt SO many others) have spent thousands of hours on the forums here and anxiously pressing the refresh button waiting for more news. Maybe by the 3rd anniversary we will have overtaken slashdot! Cheers.
Soz, I meant posts/page_views, not quality. OSNews is about as high quality as you can get
Very warm congratulations and thanks for a great resource. OSNews is regular daily viewing and I would be lost without it. I hope you can keep up the good work.
Regards,
Peter
thanx OSNews team for making me want to watch your site daily. It’s like a drug!
keep the good work
I have enjoyed the site for a year or two. Very informative and lively banter. I look forward to many more visits and the continued great OS coverage.

Can you just change the name of the site to GUI review, since no one here actually talks about the real merits of an os’ internals but only how pretty the screenshots look?
Lets start it right here :-))

For making OS News the best IT news site.
And please, pleeeeease, Eugenia, dont go on vacations ever again…

Congratulations OSNews
And I’ve been happy with the no ads version. Love the site, I visit every day.
Thanks for the work, and enjoy the Birthday…

<i# 1001 Flamewars[/i]
you flatter yourselves.. the so-called flamewars are often due to eugenia’s poor judgement when reporting shitty news bits.
I think that the fact you have 81 posts in this thread without any moderated ones says something about the overall opinion of this site.
Despite disgreements and differing opinions, OSnews and it’s readers are a great community. Although I’m sure disagreements & debates will continue, the fact that OSNews is still here reporting on the subjects we love and readers are still returning again and again, pretty much sums this site up as a winner.
Congratulations on a nice site!
OSNews RuLeZ This site is good because its tailored for everyone, with Linux, Windows, Mac, General, Browsers, they have a topic for Everything !
GO OS NEWS GO OS NEWS GO OS NEWS
Why? Does she have one leg shorter than the other?
OSnews is one of my must visit daily sites!!
1001 flamewars eh?
Make that 1002…
Gnome is teh sux0r! *BSD is dying!
;o)
Wow, whoda thunk?
Oh, and only 1001 flamewars?
Now, can we expect a threaded mode any time in the future? Pleease? ๐
When we gonna get some decent news eh?
Never I reacon…
This is a gret site with a lot of interesting information on different computer related subjects.
Most of this can be directly attributed to Eugenia’s (unpaid) hard work.
Thanks ๐
…also for posting my articles ๐
Happy Birthday OSnews. Hope you are around for many years to come to bring us the information we love to read. Its my home page and I wake up everyday to start my browser to see what is new. I would say the content is good, not to one sided and gives the articles that are important. If I want to hear about SCO I would go to Linux.org to get that info because they have a new one almost every day on them.
I would like to hear about the 2.6 kernal though, I don’t know how that is going.
Congratulations, happy birthday, and a long life to you. I’ve been following the OSnews since, I believe, late ’00. But I can’t remember. This is one of the greatest sites on the Internet! Keep up the good work!
…and has been for over a year as my home page.
Great site. Cheers.
Eugenia, are _you_ the new backend? :->
Congrats!
Is each occurence of Mike Bouma “moderating down” a comment that doesn’t express agreement with what he/Amiga Inc. says included in the 1001 flamewars? The ones that don’t violate OSNews forum terms and that he incorrectly calls “trolls”.
That’d leave, oh, about 1 *real* flamewar. ๐
No moderation ala /. – to hide troll comments – and still there aren’t many troll comments.
Congrats
As a long time lurker y morning coffee wouldn’t be the same without the osnews (especially the flamewars)
keep up the good work
BTW macs cost more than PCs …… ;-p
Selamat ulang tahun..and Windows Rule !!!
this site sucks…it’s one sided and opinionated as hell and i will never read it’s content again!
see ya tomorrow…i love osnews!!!!
After having too many realistic comments about Microsoft moderated down, I am hopeful this next year will bring more fairness and realism to OSNews.
Witness the recent editorial on the Inqwell regarding Microsoft announcements vs. objective progress —

The world knows what OSNews is afraid to print.
For the 2003-2004 Flamewar Season, let us hope that Team Freedom does better on OSNews than it did last season.
