Todd Verling says that binaries for JDK 1.2.2 and 1.3.1 for NetBSD are now available. You’ll find binary packages from pkgsrc-wip, as well as Sun-style JDK images, including standalone JRE and debug JDK symbols. Another relevant story about it, here.
One of the thresholds I have to overcome before trying BSD is actually the lack of Javas support. I’m looking forward to seeing 1.4 and eventually 1.5 on the BSDs.
Nice, but I am not sure if this is legal. FreeBSD has a working JDK1.3.1 for quite some time now. They have a license agreement with Sun but they are not allowed to distribute binaries until they get an official permission from Sun.
Thomas: Good point about the legality, I am one of those frusted FreeBSD users who has to spend a while compile the native jdk, because of that issue with SUN. I think sun’s attitude toward alot of things are backward, but especially in this case, I mean common, why would you not want to have Java on as many platforms possible, if you are marketting it as a multi/cross platform thing.
Because the primary platform is SUN with Windows not far behind.
In Java’s eyes some platforms are more equal than others…
