I prefer Vmware because linux can be the host operatyng system and run Windows inside the virtual machine.
i hope it is faster than vmware. i’ve given up on vmware on my windos2k/xp/+ install. Whenever i uninstall vmware 3 it totally stuffs up my network cards and network sub-system to the extent that not even a inplace-install can help me

…because VMware doesn’t emulate OS/2, AND looks like it was made to run OS/2 inside Windows.
Anyway, people still need a way to run OS/2 inside Linux, or Bochs to fully mature.
Is there any way to have Bochs not run like a quadriplegic turtle? Even the Be Bootloader takes at least a minute to start off a CD!
I sincerely wish I could a) get a free emulator/VM to work or b) afford VMWare.
Bochs is slow because it is not as optimized and because it IS an emulator.
I think this is the 5th time I am getting to explain the differences between VMware, WINE, VirtualPC and Bochs, but I won’t bite this time.
In short: VMWare is not an emulator, while Bochs is. VMware is therefore much faster. VMWare can’t run on non-x86 compatible hardware, while Bochs can. It is a trade off for portability/speed.
Well, I know the differences. I know Bochs emulates a complete x86 Pc. Shouldn’t there also be a way to have it use more of the host’s resources (or at least more efficiently), though?
Not because they don’t want to optimize it, but because they can’t by all that much. Most full emulators that run “speedily” take short cuts, meaning they normally will only run one OS pretty well (take a guess what everyone needs to run.. look at RealPC on Mac, it’s pretty speedy honestly, but it actually hacks Windows to get that extra boost. Bochs is meant to be an acurate PC emulator to testing, meaning they’ll never cut corners to speed things up.
A Linux version of this program is supposed to be in development. I’m hoping it will be good.
Coming versions of Bochs will probably also feature Plex86. This will bring a great speed-up on comps with a x86 prosessor.
People would be less pissed off when it’s time to reinstall Window XP(3rd time this year) after the bloody TCP/IP gets hoosed down.

I’ve been using Windows XP since it was released. I have helped 5 people install and configure it, two on cable modems, one on DSL, and one on dial-up. I administer a computer lab of 275 computers that we are converting to Windows XP and have been extensively testing for compatibility — and I have never heard of what you are talking about. The posts you refer to at computing.net seem to mostly be people whose MAC addresses are bound to an IP on their cable or DSL modem, and who should be requesting that specific IP address (not using DHCP). I have reinstalled XP twice and both times were pretty much because I felt like it, and not because I couldn’t use it.

The dead TCP/IP isn’t a new problem. Win2K has the same problem. Except you can deinstall and reinstall it on Win2K to fix the hosed protocol. On XP, you got to FFR the OS from scratch. IIRC there is a knowledge base number for this on MS support site.

Hell, even I am using Unix-like OSes, winduser couldn’t stop to call me, I was supposed to install win 9x, NT, 2000, XP even longhorn. Configuring nic, routing, firewall, nat.
Question: Hell, why you winduser can’t learn and do yourself, couldn’t you understand that I hate windows, cause I see you having Athlon MP or Pentium 4 and new Windows and have bugs and slowdowns that I never experienced on win9x w/ my old Pentium???
I simply can’t purpose them to install *nix they can’t normally work with Windows. Why than defend such system, if you can’t and don’t want to understand how in works?!?
BTW, however I am agreeing Schulman about Win3.1 and Win95 being the same OSes, I can’t call windows – OS, it would be unfair to those, who really try to implement POSIX. I don’t see any progress in POSIX compliance, is Cygwin only way to turn windows into OS, not only nice ui-shell.

How is that going, last I checked (a long time ago, just after it renamed) is was dieing.
The beta version which looks a lot like Bochs (funny that?) won’t run beos. I am always kind of scared to download anything from a .ru site. Don’t know why, MS server 2003 won’t even load on my new dell server and like others I have had to reload from major crashes winxp so many times I have had to call for a new number a few times. What a sad OS. I know everyone uses it but there must be a better OS. I use almost every known OS at work on thousands of machines. We have QNX and AIX machines that have never ever crashed in 10 years.

2. Download RC1 version. Trial version is too old

I won’t go into why Win3.x and Win9x are different, but if you want POSIX on Windows, you’re pretty much going to have to move to NT(/2k/XP) and get Interix/Services for Unix, or, as you pointed out, Cygwin.

Maybe you should stick a broom up your silly arse. And tell McAfee that its anti-virus software fvcks up the TCP/IP stack on XP and uninstalling VirusScan fixes it. I solved the problem by pure luck. It could have been anything…

Agreed. . .I don’t understand using Windows as the host OS. Doesn’t it make more sense to use the more efficient and robust operating system as the host and put the unreliable resource hog into the virtual environment? Windows-as-guest I can understand. I would be quite surprised if the Windows-with-OS/2-guest aproach is even half as usable as running Windows as the guest in VirtualPC on OS/2.
1. If you are going to migrate from OS/2 to Windows for some reason you better to have Windows as host and OS/2 as a guest.
2. If you have to use both Windows and OS/2 on the same desktop and you are going to use resource consuming Windows applications (such as MS Office, Adobe Photoshop or .NET) and light OS/2 applications (such as Netscape 4.7). Due to lack of perfomance in this case OS/2 guest option is more suitable.
3. If you Windows user and you are going to try OS/2, eComStation or Linux in safe environment.
