“Using open-source software like Linux is a no-brainer for many companies. It’s stable and can be fixed easily if bugs appear, and you can’t beat the price. But some companies and government organizations are taking their commitment to open source a step further by actively participating in the open-source community.” Read the article at ComputerWorld.
This article struck me. Why ? Because I’m a part of it.
Not directly, of course. My name isn’t mentionned or anything.
The European Community is financing 19 different projects in Europe when they use open source software and tools. In Bengium, they have delegated the distribution of funds to Aramis (www.aramisasbl.be), an inter-university consortium.
In Belgium, there are only 2 companies being helped : ‘Technord Automation’ and ‘Ades S.A.’.
And I’m an intern at the latter. The project I’m working on is the automation of a production line with 3 cameras using Red Hat Linux (the company Euresys which builds the frame grabber cards we’re using is developing the drivers with that distro).
Anyway, it’s a cool project and I’m happy to be working on it.
