I just hope, next version will be based on XFree 4.3
This update fixes few very big bugs, and adds some improvements. My favourite is hadrware accelerated scrolling in 16 bit mode.
With X11 in OS X has been copying and pasting to xterms. For some reason I can copy but I cannot paste.
Hotkeys for spawning X11 applications would also be nice.
Also, command-Q should do something… perhaps send the destroy event to the given application?
I think it’s not release 3, but only 0.22 (from 0.21)
And to paste in X11 you must use control+V instead of Cmd

umm, your versioning theory is retarded. This is Public Beta 3 — three version have been released to the public. That doesn’t mean it’s version number 0.3 though, not at all. Each new build gets a new number whether or not it gets released–this versioning is related to milestones too. So we’ve seen .21 and .22, and I don’t remember earlier version numbers…. So there’s been around 20 versions in the past six months.
To answer your question though, expect 1.0 to appear in 10.3 some time this summer.
Can someone please tell me what “rootless” means in the
context of X, and also how it’s possible to run OSX’s GUI
(Aqua) and X at the same time? Further, if you’re running
X, what window manager are you running with it… Wait,
I guess Aqua is both a display server *and* a window
manager. Ugh. I think I’m flummoxed.
“Rootless” means there is no root window. In X windows, the root window is a window as large as the screen that exists behind all other windows. It can be thought of as the “desktop” in a way.
The reason that X11 for Mac OS X has a “rootless” mode is that Mac OS X already has a desktop, and root window would block other OS X windows.
Is there anyway to set apples X11 server up so it isn’t rootless? I prefer to have just the one X11 screen that I can minimise eaisly and be done with. Been trying to work this out for ages but not been able to find an answer.
Any ideas?

Yes. There was an X11 I used previously that worked just like that. I forgot exactly where I got it, but it was just a strait port of X11 for OS X and you switched between the two systems using apple-option-A or somthing like that. Wish I could remember more, sorry.

Does Apple’s X11 have Xnest? If so, “Xnest :1” and off you go.

Are you using that single-button mouse that Apple delivers? If not, try to paste pressing the middle-button on your mouse, just like X in any other platform.
Also, if ^V doesn’t work, try Shift-Insert.
The article link in the update is kinda sketchy at best. It seems like it’s geared toward people who don’t have a largely technical background, but it spreads a little misinformation here and there. One quote, “Say the UNIX web server fails catastrophically at 2AM and, in a last ditch effort to save the day, IT support swaps over an old PC running FreeBSD to take over serving the corporate web site–and realizes it’s faster, more stable, more reliable, and free. ” makes you think that he’s a mindless GNU zealot, as the liklihood of that situation is minimal, I can’t imagine an old P2 running fBSD being faster or more secure as a server than, say, a new Solaris box. Regardless, later he states “..they lack the support of commercial applications like Photoshop, Office, Dreamweaver, and other tools that are invaluable when working in the corporate environment.” which is pretty ironic, seeing as the Linux community has had the Gimp for a while now (he even mentions it) and OpenOffice.org (as well as StarOffice when it was free).
If you have “emulate 3 Button mouse” checked in your preferences copy and paste is easy. To copy just highlight text. Paste using the click of the mouse and holding down the option key. Just like real UNIX!

Thanks. I get more of it now. X runs without having or drawing a root window. When the user gives focus to a window with an x-client running in it, the X server connected to that window listens for events and draws stuff using whatever subsystem OSX provides.
I guess Aqua/quartz is the window manager for OSX’s GUI as well as for any instances of X that are running (usually only one).
Hmm. At first, it’s weird to think that you may have multiple display servers running.

Option+click is what I was looking for
Apple. We want a two button mouse. The Kensington mouse I bought freezes. I have to unplug/replug when I boot up on occasion. Make it an option, when you buy a computer. I just want a quality driver! This mouse makes me feel like I did when I used my PC!
