Opera Software ASA today unveiled Opera 6.0 for Windows Beta 1, introducing a browser with an array of new and improved features, including a completely new default user interface, skins, buttons and panels. With the release of Opera 6.0 for Windows (3.2 MB), Opera reaches out to users accustomed to competing browsers’ single document interface (SDI) and targets users in regions that previously could not use Opera.

I like it – a lot more snappy feel than opera 5.12.
I tried to install it, and my Virus scanner found what it believes is a virus in Opera.exe. The file was moved for deletion, since it could not be sanitized.

Very nice update. Very stable (so far) for a beta. Will get back to you on the features, there are plenty of them. So far I’ve noticed more of an improved user experience than anything else. Anyone know how to make the icons for back, forward, reload, etc smaller?
I’m using opera 6.0 right now, seams very nice. only complant is that the header takes 1/3 of my screen. Anyone know of a way to ditch say the bar that has the Opera and amazon.com links and stuff. Thats wasted space. The advertisments arn’t so bad. And you can choose that they show. I’m just glad it hasn’t crashed my computer like it does in Beos

getting rid of stuff: right click, select either ‘off’ or ‘bottom’
smaller icons: you can srink the toolbars quite a bit by turning off the text (in prefs (alt p), you could also download a smaller icon set (5 comes with, however 6 does not seem to) by going to opera’s home page.
Yeap, I like Opera 6 so far.
YOu can always press F11 to view a full screen window (even without the adds) and with Opera’s keyboard only navigation you can work productively in this environment. A lot of BeOS users actually registered Opera (guilty) so we dont get these annoying adds. Opera actually picked up my registration from 5.12 and I’m a registered 6.0 beta user. Yeah.
Now if only Opera would work with http://www.asx.com.au (Australia stock exchange) – some silly javascript which only works with IE5.x

You can change the dialogs displayed and select “Images only” for the buttons. By modifying it, it will only take some pixels height, not so much as the default size, which is indeed a bit too much.
Yeah I found that, though like you say you need to use keyboard shortcuts so its kinda worthless in that mode. only when you need to type something should keys be needed/used when browsing, using two devises at once sucks. I don’t mind that adds at all really, even without them you wouldn’t gain much space. Yeah my schools web page which i can check grades and register for classes and such, basicly a realy important page doen’t work with Opera, it gets blocked, even when claiming to be IE 5.0 . I think the only thing that can access it is NS4.7 and IE . Still though my hats of to Opera, it looks like a real nice Browser. And seams to avoid the everything but the kitchen sink approach of other browsers. Or rather it can do most things but you can just disable them so there never even around. Makes for a nice clean look and feel. And the Tabs rock, New page vroom new page vroom weeeeee!
Actually, Brad, if you use the mouse gestures which is a part of Opera since 5.x, you can navigate with your mouse entirely, except for text input of course.
For instance, if you want to go back to the previous page, hold down the right button while you click on the left. Switch that, and you go forward one page.

Opera has always been pretty cool. This version is very fast, and seems not to have taken a huge perf hit for skinning like Nav 6. The add at the top is pretty irritating, but I can understand; hey, they want to make money, they’re a business.
Two complaints:
1) In my current window size, I’m scrolling back and forth to read the text on this page. Opera isn’t sizing the text appropriately to fit in the window.
2) When is a browser besides IE going to have full support for NTLM? Most business users are working on Windows machines, and NTLM provides a simple way for authentication to occur transparently to the user.
I disabled the virus scanner on machine #3 to take a look at this.
I’ll give this a try. I hope it tempts me away from 3.60 … something 4.x/5.x have never done because they feel so sluggish in comparison on my AMD-K6 200/64 Mb SDRAM machine. I use an alternative to 3.60 (3.62 did not reliably manage the cache, which was unacceptable for my log-on/hit-a-bunch-of-sites/log-off/go-back-and-read browsing style), only when when 3.60 has Javascript execution or page rendering problems.
To remove this simple right-click on the lets say amazon search box, go to show searches and turn them off!
Window size is not operas fault (well it is, but not…) Eugenia has used custom scrolly bars, which just don’t work in Opera.

Opera has always seemed reluctant to give webmasters too much control over the apperance of browser widgets, and forms too. Personally it’s a stance I don’t mind at all – in fact Opera 5.12 is close enough to my definition of a perfect browser that I think I’ll be staying with it for a while.
Definitely feels more responsive than 5.x. Still not as fast as 3.60, judging by how fast it loaded some graphics heavy pages from my local drive, but almost acceptable. Hopefully as the bugs get fixxed and the debug code comes out in the final release the speed will be increased further.
On a more arcane note, I ran the 6.0 executable through a header analysis program and it no longer has the infamous “TerminateProcess” string (see http://www.radsoft.net/resources/software/reviews/blacklist.html) that the 3.x/4.x/5.x executables have.
RadSoft’s “TerminateProcess” paranoia is pure nonsense. All software using Microsoft’s standard win32 libraries will have the string “TerminateProcess” in its executable.
HOWEVER: This does not mean that the software uses this call. It is simply a trace of the MS-tools used to create the software!
RadSoft is full of lies and deception, and the list of “dangerous” software speaks for itself. ALL MICROSOFT PRODUCTS! Hehe…

Again: The string is there because they develop the software using Microsoft’s standard libraries. IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT THE FUNCTION IS CALLED — AT ALL!
