The Verge on the new version of Apple’s Podcasts application: “For starters, Apple has removed the universally-panned ‘tape deck’ UI element that could be found when playing back a podcast.” An angel got its wings today.

Whilst it is nice that the software is getting in sync with the hardware, I worry that we will end up swinging all the way to flat design for all platforms without any choice.
I agree, but that is exactly where we are headed, a flat look with lots of empty space everywhere. The benefit of the flat look that no one talks about is that this look requires only a very simple and rudimentary video card. The days of needing an expensive video card or dual-cards in your computer, or expensive video processor in your tablet or smartphone are over. Unless you are a gamer or the manufacturer has enabled 1080p video (a whole other subject considering that you need to have at least a 44″ display to even SEE 1080p video’s benefits) a very rudimentary and simple video card will do, since there are no Aero or Compiz or other such fun video stuff that used to be desirable and fun to have until Vista ruined the experience for everyone with its overkill.
Not sure I see what’s so controversial about Apple’s podcast app. If you like it, use it. If not there are many other podcatchers for iOS, both free and paid such as RSSRadio, Downcast, and iCatcher to name but a few.
The iCloud keep-in-synch is very nice, but why can’t it be in synch with podcast subscriptions in iTunes?
I listen podcasts either in iTunes on my iMac or on an iPod nano in my car, which I synch to my iMac when I get home. The iOS podcast app is a separated thing and I don’t want to resubscribe my podcasts there and manually figure out what I have and haven’t listened.
Oh yeah, I just HATED that I was forced to look at that godawful skeuomorphic (sp?) tape deck all the time, it just hurt my eyeballs. How could Apple force that on users all the time. Tape decks went out of style and use 30 years ago, don’t force me to look at them again and bring back all those bad memories.
Give me a break, Apple did NOT force that on anyone. The tape deck was behind a panel that users had to slide to ever see the thing. If they didn’t want to look at they didn’t have to, it wasn’t forced on anyone. I didn’t want to look at it all the time, but once in a while it was sortof cool to watch. But it was an OPTION, not default behaviour, so give it a rest.
Plus, any podcast listener worth their salt was already using Downcast or similar. It’s not like Apple’s podcast app was even vaguely the first alternative to syncing with iTunes.
