“At the Microsoft Management Summit today in Las Vegas, Microsoft officially announced that the next version of Windows Server […] will officially be named Windows Server 2012 – and will be released this calendar year. Microsoft Corporate Vice President Brad Anderson told the audience that ‘nothing Microsoft has ever done has ever been as ambitious’ as the features being incorporated into Windows Server 2012. Microsoft Principal Product Manager Jeff Woolsey walked through a few of those features, including Server 2012’s storage pooling and the boosted capabilities of the Hyper-V virtual machine hypervisor.”
Are they STONED? Do they think the way to sell a SERVER OS is to make it into…a fricking cellphone? Seriously? I’m starting to wonder if Ballmer hasn’t secretly been replaced by the PHB from Dilbert because surely someone who even had the teeniest tiniest understanding of a server would know that bling bling and touchscreens are NOT the wants of your vast majority of admins! Argh!
I can’t wait until this Apple wannabe moron gets a nice pink slip, my guess is if not by Xmas then first quarter 2013 and frankly it can’t happen soon enough!
it’s certainly a bold move but windows server has always been graphical anyway, although they started offering a core version since windows 2008
You have to think of the possibilites as well, imagine you are out of office and a problem arise on one of your server, you can just rdp with your tablet and use a nice touch interface, another possibility is to have servers with just a touchscreen without mouse or keyboard like in the movies(ok this one is a bit of an exaggeration but who knows)
……”a few of those features, including Server 2012’s storage pooling and the boosted capabilities of the Hyper-V virtual machine hypervisor.”
but yet you choose to OMG on this OS because it supports touch. Maybe you don’t understand that Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 are actually based on the same internals and that Server 2012 just “got touch for free” because of this shared source.
If you would actually look at the recommendations for Server 2012 you would know that Core is actually the recommended version (so no GUI) and that the GUI has actually been adjusted to run commands on multiple servers at the same time.
Almost all management is now actually done by powershell as well.
BTW: having a touch supported, 3D accelerated GUI on a server is actually quite nice for a Terminal Server.
Server running silently in the background: Core
Management server: GUI
Terminal Server with desktop applications: Touch and 3D GUI
You certainly have no idea what you are talking about!
When was the last time you touched a server? Never I guess.
Touch has not so much to do with all what this OS offers.
Though it shares a very mature and flexible nucleus with Windows desktop versions like Windows 8, it has so many excellent server capabilities!
The management GUI is graphical (or CLI in core) and thank god for that. Underneath the graphic GUI more and more Powershell is managing it via the CLI! Best of both worlds?!
