Several points to note IMO :
1. Lycoris is WAY slow in normal use, as far as I have experienced.
2. They are still stuck on KDE 2.2.2
3. Poor hardware compatibility still.
4. Their productivity pack is just an Oo.org rip-off with LOOK enhancements.
5. Businesses would rather choose Redhat, which has a good record for support, than this small distro company. They don’t have a lot of staff as well.
6. GNOME is completely absent, and they say that if you want to run GNOME apps, use another distro.
What I like is that they are still giving out their distro free. If you want to try Lycoris, better to wait for the update having KDE 3.1.

Yes it is, but I dont really care about what version of UI I have as long as I can do my work.

well that could be said for most distros. Nativaly hardware support is narrow, but if you have some skills then its not a prob

Ok, its not JUST look enhancements, and its not just OO.org. There are other apps and it was also their first release. OO.org is just a Star Office anyway.

RH was started in 95 and has had 7yrs to grow. Lycoris has been on the block since 01 and doesnt have large backers like lindows and xandros.

Yes you cant use apps like the gimp with out gnome base libs, so thats why it is supplied. I use alot of “gnome apps” abiword x-chat, ripper-x etc.

There were a lot of bold face LIES about Lindows in there!
Lindows will outlast Lycoris.
I think it is slow compared with Windows Me on the same machine, Windows 2000 or a slower machine, and Windows XP with a similar machine but with more RAM. Plus, it is slow compared with Mandrake 9.0 out of the box, Red Hat 8.0 out of the box and Red Hat 8.1 beta 1 out of the box.
But nontheless, it is pretty amazing what they do without any venture capital, free flowing money and 3 employees.
I enjoyed the article and I think that Lycoris has done well with no venture capital. However, their hardware recognition is still below average for Linux distributions and the OS has other minor but irritating issues they need to address. But having said that, I think that the staff at Lycoris is on the right track and I wish them success.
Whoever wrote the article should have used their spell-checker and proof-read the document (I believe consumers what a choice) before posting it.
Like what? everything he said about Lindows is true? he didn’t bash it…just stated facts…..AFAIK.
Please point out specific examples of what you think was the FUD.
He claims that Lindows hides there source and that is simply not true. All the source code with the exception of Click-n-Run is available. Click-n-Run is a proprietary app and Lindows is in no way obligated to release it.
He also compared IRIS to CNR and dogged CNR for haveing MORE apps than IRIS. Less is more? Give me a break.
He also claims “We provide an OS, an office suite, a gaming suite and more to follow. Lindows doesn’t offer those products…” and that is simply not true. In fact the products that Lycoris offers are usually available at no cost and Lindows offers several commercial apps that are NOT available for free.
Star Office 6 = $75 value
Photogenics = $69 value
TuxRacer Deluxe = $25 value
Hancom Sheet = $15 value
Bitstream Fonts Package = $99 value
The fonts alone justify the cost. And nobody says you have to renew every year. If there is nothing new that you want from CNR, then don’t renew.
The other thing that kinda torked me was the comment “We’ve got an amazing and friendly community with strong Open Source roots, Lindows doesn’t.” Bull-you-know-what!! Lindows has a great community just as good as Lycoris and certainly not as judgmental. Go look at the Lindows forums if you want. The members forums are available for viewing and there is an area for non-members to post questions and comments.
Now as I end this rant, I’d like to point out that I am an Insider as well as a Lycoris user. Lindows just has a more complete package and a much better future in my opinion.
Where are the Lindows forums that are available for viewing by the public? I’ve searched all over the site and I can’t find any such forums. There are FAQs and Knowledge Base type articles, but I’d like to see the forums.
