“AMD continues to abide by their commitment to provide open-source support for their graphics cards and as proof of that this afternoon they have released their initial hardware acceleration code that supports the ATI Radeon HD 5000 “Evergreen” family of consumer grade graphics processors. While this Evergreen support isn’t yet finished and for the time being is targeted towards Linux developers and enthusiasts, you can now play around with your ATI Radeon HD 5000 graphics processor on an open-source driver while having 2D EXA, X-Video, and OpenGL acceleration.”
How long till we get OpenGL4.1, OpenCL1.1 and Gallium3D sorted?
Any chance of getting on top of GPU development? I.E. having release day support for at least 2D for ATI cards?
A long time. Well, Gallium3d might not be so far off, relatively speaking, but OpenGL 4.1 is. I think Mesa is around OpenGL 2.1 at this point, although I may be wrong.
Maybe not so long. As far as I know the jump to supporting OpenGL 2.1 is quite big. And from this to 3.0 and then 4.0 is much smaller. Definitey not what the version numbers would suggest. So we might be getting OpenGL 3/4 sooner then we think.
I been using Linux for almost 10 years now and a year for FOSS driver support on hardware is whats to be expected in general. It’s good since it means cheap hardware and bad because we’re all geeks and want the newest stuff when we go shopping.
Once I accepted this fact all my hardware problems disappeared.
I’m sure I know the answer to this but AMD staff do most of the development of the FOSS driver anyway and they preform better once they’re mature. It seems like a duplication of effort.
I bet if they did this and open sourced the Stream SDK the put Nvidia’s Cg to rest.
What does Stream have to do with Cg?
I guess you meant Cuda.
Your right I did.
