Submitted by Apple has updated its Leopard operating system by releasing Mac OS X 10.5.3. “The Mac OS X 10.5.3 Update is recommended for Mac OS X 10.5, 10.5.1, and 10.5.2 Leopard. It includes general operating system improvements that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac.”The update fixes a whole number of small bugs and annoyances. A number of bugs in Spaces I heard a few complaints about have been fixed, most importantly “resolves an issue in which switching to a different space and returning back to the original space may reorder the application windows with a different active window.”. Mail.app also received some love, but from the list I’m not able to tell if they fixed the issue where you cannot drag a subfolder back to root in the mailbox structure.
As always, you can either just use the Software Update tool (recommended) or download the standalone packages, which come in delta form (update from Mac OS X 10.5.2 to 10.5.3) or in combo form (update from Mac OS X 10.5, 10.5.1, or 10.5.2 to 10.5.3). These will become available from Apple’s website.
VMWare and Parallels all run slowly post-LGU and since LGU is built into 10.5.3 we cannot simply avoid that update anymore.
The good news now though is that VirtualBox now works smooth as silk. Excellent stuff.

The question now is whether OSX will run better or worse on non-Apple hardware.
Bug fixes in general are good and should help, but updates are also Apple’s opportunities to purposely break things.

Haha. That’s funny. I want to see if they fixed the issues with firewire hardware and poor audio performance for these interfaces. There has also been some issues with their video card drivers on certain models. The nvidia drivers for the SR MBP were still pretty weak in Leopard. Lots of things need fixing hopefully this will take care of them.
I doubt Apple have a hackintosh that they run just so they can ensure updates break it.

it works on hackintoshes assuming you use pc_efi and assuming you’re not dumb enough to run it on completely non-standard hardware that doesnt even come close to resembling a real mac.
‘AppleIntelCPUManager.kext’ will likely panic your system once it gets installed and automatically loads itself as usual. if you don’t remove it before it gets loaded your system will die.
I suspect that your question will call out the legions of fanboys who will curse you and your future generations for daring to install OS X on non-Steve Jobs approved hardware. That would be part and parcel to “having your cake, and eating it too” which we all know Apple is completely against.
Although, I am interested in knowing the answer myself….not that I’m planning to put one together. You know…it’s just out of curiosity.

Its not going to happen – and personally, I think you would be better off giving Ubuntu or OpenSolaris 2008.5 a go. Mac OS X will always be wed to the hardware because that is what gives Apple the ability to develop rapidly and not have to have a huge number of developers to test and trace the numerous possible hardware related bugs that comes with the model used in the Wintel world.

/partition3 –> MacOS 10.5.2
/partition4 –> Fat32 Personal Data
/partition5 –> Linux Swap
as you can see these three OSes live happy
Partition1 was originally Vista’s one.
As you can see Vista is eclipsing itself.

I’m just pointing that MacOS is a FAR BETTER operative system than Windows Vista, in every category.
Let me note this: i’m not an apple fanboy.
My main os is gentoo, but i like to boot mac os at least a day in week to test its apps.
So … because you multiple partitions on your hard drive with various OS’s installed … therefore Vista is “crapware?”

..actually, I think the fact that Vista was removed and replaced with XP declared that quite loudly.

I’m glad to have this on my machine now. It only took 6 months for Apple to get a stable version going. (At least, I hope it’s stable.) People shouldn’t complain about Ubuntu’s strict release schedule hurting 8.04 when Apple took around 2.5 years to get Leopard to this point and they didn’t give it away.
Performance is somewhat improved, though I haven’t run it long enough to get a good feel for it. Some small, annoying bugs have been fixed and hopefully, some larger bugs like the wireless support have been put to bed for the rest of Leopard.
I’m thankful that they’ve updated RAW file support for digital SLRs but they’re woefully behind on that. Of course, mobile phones are in a similar situation of being supported.

On my G4 mac mini, my entire screen would flick upside-down for a fraction of a second whenever I exited any app, and 10.5.3 fixes it
About time, but better late than never.
Don’t worry, they messed up something else to fix that.
I had a few applications running and at some point, all of the menu bar items of all the application menus decided to be displayed at once. It even stayed long enough to get a screen shot of it.
I’m just happy it wasn’t anything worse.

10.5.3 breaks Diablo 2 LoD… it fails to start. If only i knew before i upgraded.
I bought my mum her first Mac for Xmas, and while ‘selling it hard’ to my dear mother she wasn’t too impressed that 10.5.2 completely broke printer support. It took around 2 weeks for a minor update to come down the line.
And now I just heard 10.5.3 brakes Diablo 2, probably among other applications.
I suggest people don’t “install” the update for at least a couple of weeks until all the known critical bugs in the update are well understood.

It’s always a good idea to wait, unless you’ve been waiting for some things to be fixed, of course.
It seems odd that Blizzard games are always in the middle of the fixes. Everything else I’ve played seems fine. Other third party software seems okay, but then, I had to upgrade a lot because they would not run with Leopard.
