Microsoft has delayed the upcoming release of Windows Server 2008. “Windows Server 2008, which we have been saying would Release to Manufacturing by the end of the calendar year, is now slated to RTM in the first quarter of calendar year 2008. Why? Well, as you know, Microsoft’s first priority is to deliver a great product to our customers and partners, and while we’re very happy with the feedback we’re getting and the overall quality of the latest product builds, we would rather spend a little more time to meet the high quality bar that our customers and partners deserve and expect.”
Presumably if the assumption that a synchronised Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2k8 release was planned is correct this means Vista SP1 final is also delayed?
I’d say so. I’m actually happy that Microsoft is holding things back. They got Windows Vista out there door – admitingly its not perfect, but it is out the door. I hope that the result is that SP1 and Windows 2008 Server address many of the problems people have raised with Windows Vista.
IIRC basically Windows SP1 is Windows 2008 Server minus the server components; many of the ‘server orientated kernel features’ (along with other features) were held back for Windows 2008 server and SP1.
With Vista they made delay after delay to turn a bad quality product into a sub-standard quality product. I have a feeling that mar happen but it won’t be as severe as Vista.
credit wherer credit is due. MS has done well with their server OS’s. 2003 was stable and good. 2000 was well known for being a good product and so on. i actualy believe 2008 will be good. for 2 reasons. 1, referencing past server releases. 2, ms knows damn well they cant afford another screw up like what vista turned out to be. it has been a media disaster for MS. if server is not a success linux is oging ot be all over that and vendors will start pushing there linux or unix products harder. because when windows is bad not only the MS look bad but so does teh vendor for selling a bad product. good luck MS dont make a lier out of me.
I guess if Windows Server 2008 is pushed back to March 2008, and Viridian will ship 180 days after that, we have another year before Microsoft’s virtualization product actually becomes useful. Oh well, more for VMware I guess—I’m glad I bought their stock.
I’ve been saying for years that Microsoft needs to take their time on an OS release, and tell people that it’s not being released until they’re 100% satisfied with the quality. While that might hurt short term profits, it will be beneficial in the long run. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that I saw an article recently saying that the estimated number of desktop Linux users has doubled in the last year. There have been far too many disastrous initial Windows releases in the past, i.e. Windows 1.x, 2.x, 3.0, NT 3.5, Windows95, WindowsME and recently Vista. It seems Microsoft has realized that they really can’t do this with Server 2008, especially if they want to make serious inroads in enterprise *nix adoption.
I’m a Linux user, formerly an OS/2 user, and I’ve always had a disdain for Windows, but I have to give MS a hand here. They’re finally doing the right thing.

I got a simple question for you: Was there any Windows OS _not_ delayed? Why should it change now?
It is a business trick and ever was. People wait for the next shiny Windows release instead of using a competing product. Then Windows gets delayed, and they wait just a little bit longer…
This worked really great with Windows 95 against OS/2. OS/2 Warp was out and ran very well, still people waited for “Windows Chicago”…
