“The last piece of the openSUSE 10.2 distribution got released today. The Live DVD image has a size of 1.7 GB and can be used on every x86 compatible system with at least 512 MB of memory. It contains a base desktop system (KDE and Gnome) with applications for office, multimedia and internet usage.”
i dont see what they are pumping into it that it needs ‘at least’ 512mb ram, ubuntu packs everything in there well at 256, same with most others, (some as little as 64)…
love the ui of opensuse, (slab menu, etc) but its looking to be going the ‘King Kong’ route, instead of a ‘Gorilla’ route..

Most OS developers recommend a system have at least 512 MB. This is based on realizing consumers are running more than just the OS. At least it’s not as demanding as Microsoft’s Windows Vista which has a minimum system requirement of 1 GB RAM.
I am running Slax/Popcorn edition + 2 GB USB memory stick and I just added flash, dia, wifi connection modules and it only took 150 mb. it has all I need. It has Abiword, xmms, firefox web-browser. It is faaaaaaaaaassssssssssssstttttttttttttttttttttt!!!!!
At least for me is enough. I don’t have to install a 2-4 GB operating system anymore. Do I need 1-4 GB of RAM and 2-4 GB of HD to type a letter????????????? no.
sn0n….try Zenwalk or any of the Slax flavors. You won’t regret.

Open SUSE is nice looking distro. It is very fast and
YAST is reasonable fast too. Hardware detection is great and automatic system configuration is great ( at least better than other distribution did on my Duron 850 MHz system)
I’ve installed Open SUSE 10.2 from DVD that came shrinkwraped with latest Linux PRO magazine ( Feb. 2007 Issue 75 ).
nedvis@suse:~> uname -a
Linux suse 2.6.18.2-34-default #1 SMP Mon Nov 27 11:46:27 UTC 2006 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux
As I said everything is fine and good and OK but
support for multimedia is totally screwed up to the point where even after couple of hours of reading instructions, adding installation sources(repositories), manual editing etc. all efforts are FRUITLESS.
I left with great looking distro with which I don’t know WHAT TO DO.
I really appreciate the work you’re doing, openSUSE developers, and I really understand the FOSS philosophy and such but I need access to (proprietary) media formatted files/sources and I need it NOW!!!
Don’t get me wrong OpenSUSE 10.2 will stay on one of my spare hard-disks for while, but my main OS for day-to-day use is going to be Vector Linux 5.8 Multimedia. Very close to VL 5.8 would be Zenwalk and ( in 3rd/4th place) Mint Linux/DreamLinux.
OK , I can watch Adobe Flash news at http://www.nytimes.com
but ,then, embeded java script to Flash media at
http://news.yahoo.com does not work.
Streaming media from http://www.apple.com/trailers
doesn’t not work as well.
And, remember, we’re living in environment often described as consumerism, marketing governed and filled with all kinds of multimedia messages launched from gazillion sources to gazillion potential clients.
Let’s work on that!
I know it’s not something openSUSE team should take care of but at least give us step-by-step instructions on how to get my mp3 collection of songs to work (sorry I don’t want it to play in Real Player ) and how to watch Shrek 2 DVD on my PC.
Anyway, great job openSUSE gurus!
sincerely,
nedvis

A simple google search reveals the following site:

Follow those directions. MP3 plays out of the box on the DVD version with HelixBanshee or Amarok btw as well.
Thank you, DrillSgt for the link you provided.
Yes I know Jam Matzan whose SuSE tweaks, tricks and tips I came across long ago.
To me it’s not a big deal to make my SuSE boxes deal with multimedia better but, as I said, “what should I tell my friends” less geeky guys not that familiar with Linux who really like SuSE GUI (or better yet its look-and-feel) better than, for instance, – Fedora and I have to force them to install FC6 , PCLinuxOS or VetorLinux instead.
Personally I think support for multimedia in OpenSuSE is definitely a show-stopper.
Somehow I’ve got Amarok to play mp3 (for which I don’t really care since I have my parallel *.ogg vorbis songs library on external HD) but, strangely, I don’t really know what I did to get it to work.
Anyway since my Canon Lide 25 scanner, my cheap HP printer and digital camera as well as WEB camera work well on OpenSUSE box it is going to stay her for while.
Just tell them it’s certainly not a bad choice to install 10.2
If you also make them aware of some recommended repositories and tips:
http://linux.wordpress.com/2006/12/11/opensuse-102-list-of-recommen…
http://linux.wordpress.com/2006/12/20/opensuse-102-the-most-complet…
Thank you or the links; I’ve bee there but adding the source from link #1 is permanently giving me an error:
http://software.opensuse.org/download/KDE%3a/KDE3/openSUSE_10.2…
Unknown Error: Downloading metadata failed (is YUM source?) or user did not accept remote source. Aborting refresh.
Any idea what’s going on.
Anyway, I really like new openSUSE 10.2.
WIl try to find the way around the problem I’m having with additional repositories.
Take care!
What about a slash forward at the end of the link ?:-)
Is anyone else unwilling to touch OpenSUSE with a ten foot pole now because of Novell?

OpenSuSE is back on track with it’s 10.2 release.Gone are the problems with the zmd updater and a remarkably slow installation.I’m running 10.2 at the moment and besides the usuall dependency hell with the third party repos (it’s a no brainer to get DVD/mp3 playback but the dependency checker is either generating a lot of false positives when you want to update the oackages or..).Nothing i can´t handle or i’m not used to though.
SuSE isn’t that Open as the name suggests.Other than that the Desktop is slick and no other distro seems to be able to tightly integrate KDE the way OpenSuSE does.Very fine designed desined distro.
8/10
No. SUSE is still one of the best available and will hopefully continue to be. The MS “deal” crap will blow over and people will become less religious and more reasonable, as much as I didn’t like it either, I’m not abandoning them bases on ideology. SUSE works best for me and my office…so I’ll keep using it.
“religious”…”ideology”
Do you even know what the whole Novell/Microsoft thing is about.
What on earth are you on about seriously, Novell *contribute* to the Open source community(sic). With both time and code.
Unfortunately what they did had was potentially harmful to the Linux community even those who *don’t* use SUSE.
…it was a dumb move.
What has this to do with Religion, or even ideology please justify your statement.

Maybe I’ll try the liveDVD one day…
Surely I’ll try *not* to install it here… I had so many problems with a single machine that I don’t want to risk too much with a wider install.
Fedora Core 6 is doing a far better job and is faster.
The habit of having “nice user interfaces” is a thing I start to hate, I don’t really need the useless K menu that comes with 10.2 and it transparency on my machines.
I’m using them to work, not to play, and I want them to be fast and responsive.
Some distributions are starting to get too similar to Windows for me, while I was used to have Linux run faster than any other OS.
But this was years ago, before Linux wanted to reach “the mass”, installing loads of useless things just because they were “beautiful” to see on a desktop.
