The new Nottingham-based company will be assembling notebooks locally using current Intel and AMD x86 mobile processors. The notebooks are said to be designed with close co-operation from nVidia, ATi and Microsoft.” Ok, so they have no relationship whatsoever with the original Acorn machines, but seriously, now you can outshine Apple’s glowing logo with a much cooler one.
I remember using Acorn computers at school in the UK. It’s great to see them making a comeback in a sort of “british apple hardware company”

Its no more of a comback than someone putting the word “Amiga” on a PC laptop
Remember the Commodore Colt ?? They put their logo on a 8088 computer. I remember seeing them in stores. Toys R Us actually…hahaha
i didn’t find a laptop on their site that uses a nvidia chipset.
Somehow, this feels a bit like Tony Blair licensing the right to call himself Winston Churchill.

Amazing that simply having the same name and logo as a long defunct (but fondly remembered) computer manufacturer can get them so much free publicity.
Maybe if those laptops included RISC OS (using Virtual RISC PC) then I could see why people on OSNews.com would be interested in their release. As it is I just wish people would ignore the “new Acorn”, I don’t think they deserve to get extra column inches because of this cynical marketing gimmick.
If they’re actually a success on the back of warm nostalgic feelings towards the Acorn brand, which classic computer brand names are going to be abused next? I don’t have any desire to see the Sinclair name on a generic modern PC…

I cant wait for SGI to close its doors and buy the name and make a SGI laptop, to compete with Apple.

For a moment, I thought this was an announcement by Castle (or whoever) about RiscOS laptops… and then I noticed they’re using 80×86 processors… Oh. Phooey.
I would buy one of these machines on account of the fact they are British assembled and supported. The Americans like to stamp things “made with pride in the USA”. We British should take a leaf out of our American brothers book and support our own industry.

Assembled in Britain maybe, but most of the components will be made somewhere in Asia. This country like many others have abandoned the manufacturing industries and it will be our undoing.
If they made an affordable, lightweight, long battery life, ARM-based (e.g. Cortex) laptop with a decent keyboard and wifi chip supported by vanilla linux/freebsd, then they might have had some credibility with me. I know this is only fantasy though…
