“It is with great delight that I announce the first bulk shipment of free Linux disks from the Free Linux Disk project. This shipment will put Linux into the hands of people from around the world. This would not have been made possible without support from the contributors, the sponsors, and your donations. A huge thank you to everyone that continues to help and make the project a success. I would like to give special thank you to the project contributors. They have shipped over 1000 requests at their expense. They are a tremendous help to the project and their efforts are very much appreciated.”
I love this. Many distros supported. (Yes! Includes Gentoo and Ubuntu.)
Follow their link to Ubuntu’s ShipIt project. They’ll send you original Ubuntu CDs for free (x86/AMD64/PPC), I’ve had great experiences with them, even tough I live near the end of civilization, I always got 5/10/15 disks when I requested them.
bof, i tried ubuntu and kubuntu but i deleted them after a few time
no great managing tool like mandriva and suse
hardware detection so so
and both are not enought polish
That doth truly rock.
I’ve just been to their homepage to check it out… quite dissapointing in fact all the links to ask for a shipment claim the daily limit has been reached, and the choice of linux flavors is very limited as well… I don’t see the point, other than cheap publicity, if they aren’t serious about meeting demand!!!
How are they not “serious about meeting demand”?
They’ve just been linked to by major tech news site, who knows how many requests they’ve had.
Besides this they appear to be a small project. You could always donate time and/or money to their project and help them meet highe demands.
Their lack of flavors isn’t much a complaint, especially with their small size. Suse, Fedora, Mandriva, Gentoo, Debian, Knoppix, Ubuntu and a “request your own”. That’s quite a selection if you ask me, especially for a small group of people taking it on.
For those in rural areas who don’t get anything but dial-up this is a great project. Even if it only helps out a few, these new users might turn around and donate or help out in other ways. They might even let others borrow their CD.
At any rate, it is free/gratis. Not much to complain about there…
There’s just no pleasing some people.
So now they’re actually giving away the OS and paying for the shipping charges. How much longer before they desperate enough to start paying people to install it ?
It’s just anoter distribution channel, like thousands of other companies do all over the world.
Type in “free stuff” into google and see how many companies will be more than happy to send you free samples of their products.
Personally I think it’s great that there is a community out there that will put their hands in their pockets or make time in their lives to promote Linux.

No offense, but I think people should either leave their dialup on overnight (I have dialup, it’s really not that hard) or pay one of the pay to send websites.
This will get abused so badly…. like people order sh**loads of cds from ubuntus shipit for fun when they have entirely functional broadband connections.
