The Realtek 8169 network card driver has been ported to the Syllable desktop operating system from Linux. This is the first Gigabit network driver for Syllable. A beta release [.bin.zip] is available and the driver will be included in the next release of Syllable.
That’s an extremely common device, so a good choice in porting it. Seems like there are never enough drivers. Nice work Syllable Devs.
My motherboard has this card built in, too bad my router is only 100mb, so it would be pointless to use.

Gigabit networking is “pointless” for most workstations since they’ll never utilize more than a fraction of a gigabit and probably not even close to FastEthernet. That said, being able to use the card at all is still better than not being able to and there are some other performance adcvantages, such as better buffering and interrupt mitigation, to be had from gigabit cards even on fastethernet networks.

Tests I’ve run seem to indicate that Gigabit ethernet is about twice as fast as FastEthernet in most real world scenarios involving getting files off a somewhat busy fileserver across a somewhat busy network with gigabit switchs. Twice as fast obvioulsy isn’t anywhere near the theoretical maximum, but it does make a difference.
