why would someone want to run RISC OS 3 – on amiga hardware at that… Why??? What the hell’s the point? I can not imagine any benefits of RiscOS or amiga hardware

besides, the Acorn machines were sorta in competition with the Amigas… And, if I remember correctly, there’s an Atari ST emulator for the Amiga and a Mac emulator. So this is just one more ‘competitor’ beat.

I actually managed to kill a few foes…which was quite a feat, the little buggers came out of nowhere (they found you not the other way around), you had to escape their shooting without crashing (damn hard) and somehow try to shhot at ’em in the escape frenzy that followed…
out of 30 crashes…say, I woul manage to kill 1 enemy..lol…I wonder if I would do better now…
I think you confuse Lander with Virus, which is based on Zarch for the Archimedes. But Lander and Zarch/Virus have the same vector engine.

I’m not too sure why this is newsworthy; ArcEm has been around for a while and has been ported to a variety of platforms, including the GP2X portable.
Having said that, it was interesting to see Lander in action again, it brings back a lot of fond memories. I can’t think of any other game that impressed me as much as Lander, I’d never seen a game with filled polygons and such smooth animation. Of course it looks primitive today, but in 1988 it was a huge leap forward from the games I’d played previously. Even though I crashed into the ground constantly when I first had a quick game, and despite Lander being more a tech demo than something very playable (there were no enemies or objectives to complete), it really sold the Archie to me. That’s a decision I never regretted, it was a wonderful little computer with an excellent OS and plenty of quality software.
Zarch was one of the first games I bought for my Archie and along with Elite I played it constantly. I think people are a bit unfair when they criticise its difficulty and complain about it being impossible to control. The trick was to make small, controlled mouse movements rather than waving it around like mad. Moving the mouse faster doesn’t make the ship move more quickly, it generally just makes it flip over and fly into the ground. Fighting enemies isn’t hard if you fly upwards and attack them from above. I’m usually pretty bad at games, but I could play Zarch for hours without losing a life.

Shame the OS4 Hardware is like hens teeth, but I’ll certainly try the Arc version of Elite, supposed to have been the best version ever, Police ships flying in formation or something.

Why not eh?
Elite on the Archie is quite significantly different from the other ports. Ship behaviour is unlike any other version and it has a unique set of missions. For example, police and bounty hunters will actually attack enemy pirates, rather than just existing to harass you.
Purists may not like all the changes, but I think they add a lot to the game. Anyone who’s an Elite nut should definitely give it a try.

Because it’s not just the OS that is running. An entire computer is being emulated.
