Yes I wonder… I had a co worker that used to make non propagating practical joke screen savers. that were just a bit of code away from being viruses. I’m guessing/hoping there would be some kind of protection against those, and or the code bits would have rotted away.
To be honest, there aren’t many .scr files that hold my interest today. I’d be more interested if they’d implemented a host for After Dark screensaver modules.
I’m pretty sure I could already run a standalone After Dark host in Wine without using XScreenSaver. I was more thinking about the level of polish that could be achieved with a dedicated Linux-native host.
