Running Windows 3.1 in VMware (or seemingly, QEMU, but it’s not yet tested), but annoyed by having to grab and ungrab the cursor manually?
Wish you could just move the cursor in and out like a modern OS (one with USB tablet support or VMware Tools drivers), with no Ctrl+Alt dancing?
Or want to control your cursor at all under the ESXi web UI? (It doesn’t do relative input.)
With this driver, now you can. It implements the interface that VMware uses (the backdoor), replacing the existing PS/2 mouse driver.
Vital for anyone who runs Windows 3.x virtual machines.
Cool! It works exactly as advertised.
It’s the perfect addition to this set of VMware friendly drivers available here.
That package has an AMD PCNet32 driver, a patched SVGA driver, plus a DOS idler and an equivalent Windows 3.1x idler, and more.
But, why? I can’t imagine there’s a hell of a lot of legacy DOS/Win3.x software in the wild that wouldn’t be better suited to run on something like FreeDOS, WINE, or even OS/2 or Windows NT4. Running production software on what was a fairly flakey client OS from 30 years ago seems borderline insane in the 2020’s.
How else are you going to get that authentic SkiFree experience?
Not to mention the Solitaire game on Windows 10 is garbage.
And Castle of the Winds…
And let’s not forget about Chip’s Challenge! There’s important “work” to be done!
