I thought it was common knowledge that Echelon was real?
I allways hated echelon, especially it’s abilities to spy an almost all forms of electronic communication.
But recently I’ve been thinking otherwise, do you realise that Ecehlon could provide EXTREMELY valuable information regarding the US Terrorist Attacks – there is no denying that while Ecehlon ahs the power to spy on the public illegally, there are times when it is EXTREMELY usefull.
My opinion: I’m OK with Echelon, as long as it is regulated some how – to prevent abuse of the system!
That was it’s intended use AFAIK.
is whether NSA/whatever are able to decipher ssh connections/pgp encryption… AFAIK it should be impossible, but that’s not really proved…
somehow I think echelon (if it exists) is obsolete, as terrorists enjoy the same secure forms of communication as we do (?).

JK: The US Government has master key’s to the majority of encryption systems around, along with the ability to manually decrypt almost all forms of encryption – apparently this is NOT possible with PGP – but they certainly have a master key!
Ungoliant: Despite Echelon’s intended use it is still without a regulatory board to oversee that Ecehelon’s power is not abused – once a regulatory board such as this is in place, then I will support it’s use!
