After a long wait the new major version 0.7 update to Portable.NET has finally been released. The new version features numerous performance improvements, fixes for WinForms and Xml, and many other changes – read the full list of changes. The new release also brings a new runtime package (at this stage for Windows systems only) – at just under 2MB. More details.

And why are there only “external” links in this news? (oh well, “because the submitter said so”, apparantly
but I think a direct link to one of the official sites with the original announcement would be more appropriate, especially since GNU’s major focus isn’t on the operating system mentioned in the news item, but well, doesn’t matter too much, but as I said, I feel it’d be more appropriate than linking to some random site 
That is correct, the 2MB runtime package is for Windows only. Feel free to contribute equivalent small packages for other platforms. The site linked to is the only one having the list of changes in a web page format, and since I don’t have time to maintain getdotgnu.com at the moment so I’ve linked to that site.
They link to some Australian car classifieds. Anyway the news is old as Portable .NET 0.7 was released ten days ago.
No, they link to the labs section of a web site that provides the service of auto classifieds. It doesn’t matter what the site is hawking, they still need tech to implement it.
As for the announcement, 0.7 may have come out ten days ago, but there was no Windows build, just source, OS X and Linux. This runtime-only build is new too. Now if the full distro with the development tools and an installer were updated for Windows as well that would be helpful to me, but that package is still two versions behind. Perhaps I can rig it up from the runtime and the source…
I’ve tried the installer, and it is apparent that this runtime installer was partially adapted from the full installer package for Windows. It is apparent because the install profiles are called “Software Development Kit” and “Portable.NET Development”, neither of which apply here.
The components to be installed make sense though, and the installer seems to work, so only a little tweaking would make this perfect. Good work!
