On July 16th, 1993, Slackware Linux distribution was officially released. Based entirely on the Softlanding Linux System (SLS) system, it was designed for the machines with a 3.5″ boot floppy. Over the past 25 years, Slackware has turned out to be one of the most influential Linux distros around.
Truly a staple of the Linux world.
I remember using Slackware 1.1 back in 1994’ish.
It was an amazing experience. Merely learning how to
mount a floppy drive required manual configuration (editing fstab).
The first time I managed to get X running and managed to get mwm + xeyes running, I felt like I conquered the world.
Slackware was (and is) simple, well built, and easy to master once you get hang of it. Slackware was the reason I switched to Linux (form OS2 and DOS/Windows).
Even though my business uses Fedora across the board, I still have a soft spot for Slackware.
