Apple finally found some time to spec bump the Touchbar models of their MacBook Pro laptops (without fixing the keyboard, so buyer beware), and alongside it, the company announced an external GPU enclosure it created in partnsership with Blackmagic.
Alongside the release of new MacBook Pros, the company has taken an extra step toward embracing the tech by giving its seal of approval to a new system from Blackmagic – the simply named Blackmagic eGPU. The company does these kinds of partnerships from time to time – the LG UltraFine 5K Display being perhaps the most notable example.
The $699 accessory features an AMD Radeon Pro 580 graphics card and 8GB of DDR5 RAM in a fairly small footprint. There’s an HDMI port, four USB 3.1s and three Thunderbolt 3s, the latter of which makes it unique among these peripherals. The company says the on-board cooling system operates pretty quietly, which should fit nicely alongside those new, quieter MacBook keyboards.
So now you’re expected buy a crappy underpowered laptop and cover you desk with a freaking huge external GPU, external monitor, mouse and keyboard.

Well, since a lot of laptop users, Windows or Apple or even Linux, tend to cover their desks with a freaking huge external monitor and a docking station, I suppose this wouldn’t be much more if you think about it. It almost makes sense if you get passed the price tag, because you can’t cram a GPU like that into an ultrabook form factor anyway. This way, those who need the GPU can have it and those who don’t aren’t spending extra money and risking their laptop melting down. Still though, that price is pretty darned high when you consider how expensive the Macbook Pros already have become these days.
um….6 core i7 with 32 gigs of RAM is under powered?
According to Ars Technica, they did upgrade the keyboard:
“The laptops also borrow some features from the iMac Pro and the iPad Pro—the T2 chip and True Tone, respectively—and feature a revised butterfly keyboard, the third generation of the design Apple introduced in 2016 (the revision is a little more significant this time around). Apart from those tweaks to the keyboard, the basic design of the MacBook Pro is unchanged.”
