In 2003 I used PfaEdit, now FontForge, to convert screen to a TrueType font so it’d work on OS X, and I have used it as my standard bitmapped font since. I would have made the conversions public earlier, but I was concerned about whether this would be a licensing violation. It turns out the SGI fonts were released under a MIT license a few months after I initially converted them back in 2003, but I didn’t notice until today. So, here are the fonts for you to download.
The SGI font is classic. So memorable.
?
shouldn’t the title be
„SGI screen fonts converted to TTF„ ?
Depends on what TTF format he ended up with. The format on Mac used to be different (circa Classic), but Mac OS X might use the standard format Windows etc uses now. I don’t know I’m not a font guy.
It’s not retroleum if you still see these fonts daily.
They were great on Irix, but now :
Why on earth would you use them on OSX?
Bitmap fonts can be very useful for terminals. I use a ttf’d version of Terminus for my terminal font.
Indeed. I use bitmap fonts for programming and terminals too. If you don’t have a retina-type display, bitmap fonts are the only way to get crisp / sharp looking fonts.
The bitmap font I use (Raize) also has very good distinction between the glyphs: 0oO & il1L
I even have an SGI Indy, but I don’t care for that font. I prefer a nice scanlined VT220 font, which I use in OSX terminal:

My favourite vintage fonts though are the ones I made myself, pixel by pixel, on the Amiga 500.
That font is nice indeed, but years ago I got introduced to a bitmap font called Raize under Windows. I manually redrew every glyph in two font sizes, and made the first Linux version of it. Fast-forward almost 10 years, and I’m still using that font daily as my go-to programming and Gnome Terminal font.

If I have to use a mono TTF font, then DejaVu Sans Mono is the one I go for.
I am using this in my putty configurations, changed the background and foreground colors to blue tones and voila!!!
Loos fine, thanks!!
