Today, after 2 years and 10 months of work, we are pleased to announce the release of the Xfce desktop 4.12, a new stable version that supersedes Xfce 4.10.
This long period can only be explained by how awesome Xfce 4.10 was. But as all things, it needed some refreshing – and for that we saw lots of new contributors providing valuable feedback, features and bugfixes. As always, Xfce follows its steady pace of evolution without revolution that seems to match our users’ needs.
In this 4.12 cycle, we mainly focused on polishing our user experience on the desktop and window manager, and on updating some components to take advantage of newly available technologies.
this looks great. Xfce rocks.
I’m running it right now on Xubuntu 15.04 Beta 1. I like it, though it still say that is i on Xfce 4.10, I see that all the changes that is in 4.12 are in it.
While not entirely perfect, Xfce has become my desktop environment as well – after finally having to give up on Gnome 2.32.
Mate is also an option, but its window manager suffers from the same bugs in composition that plagued the old Metacity.
Personally I think there’s a lot of good to say about following a “steady pace of evolution without revolution”. Pragmatism at its best
Agreed. I find Xfce to be the least annoying desktop environment on any OS, even allowing for bugs.
XFCE people seem to be the only team to get it right.
This to the point of resurrecting and bringing up to speed Consolekit.

Hopefully they’ll be upgrading mint to include XFCE 4.12 soon?
In terms of low video card/RAM/disk space, and compatibility with apps, what is best?
I like XFCE a lot, but lately I’ve been using LXDE (Lubuntu 14.04) more.
Have any reliable review sites compared recent build of LXDE vs XFCE?
At least last time I checked on Fedora, LXDE required less memory. (… but XFCE had more features).
Best desktop environment out there.
Keep the good work XFCE team!!
