It’s a holiday in The Netherlands today, so I’m a bit late with this, but Jolla has released another Sailfish update today, and it’s a big one. The headline feature of the new update is that it enables the phone’s 4G support for all countries. So, if you have 4G, your Jolla phone will now use it. The hardware was obviously available from the beginning, but it was never enabled until now.
Aside from 4G, this update packs a whole lot more – most importantly, it fixes a major annoyance with the Sailfish browser. The browser did not keep its tab contents in memory, so each time you switched to a tab, the page had to be reloaded. This has now been addressed, and tabs stay in memory properly.
These are just two of the many, many improvements, new features, and bug fixes in this update. Us Sailfish users know where to get it.
To be honest I didn’t believe they’d actually activate 4G as a totally free software update, so I’m pretty impressed by this. The other changes offer noticeable improvements too. Thom already mentioned the browser, but ownCloud calendar sync, folders, email image blocking and a myriad small fixes are also really welcome. This has made my day (I admit it doesn’t take much!).

Now if only T-mobile NL had 4G coverage outside of the Randstad…
When it comes to software and phone. Jolla is excellent! But when it comes to customer service and helping. Jolla is sort of the worst company ever.
If your Jolla phone breaks:
– Need to send it to Finland if your outside of Finland
– They recommend expensive sendings
– Repairing of screen costs 200,- Euro!!! for something that is obvious a Jolla mobile issue. The whole sceen sudden cracked without mine hitting the ground etc!
I am writing lots about Jolla on my site, but since the full release. My phone have become less stable. I hope this fix fixes:
– Gallery that jumps back to camera mode out of sudden
– Sometimes calls cant be taken
– Settings doesn’t have quick WiFI switch like before
– Charging sometimes doesn’t allow the device to boot
If your screen broke magically (which I doubt, glass tends not to do that, but alas) you have the right to a free repair/replacement. European warranty and all that.
If your screen broke because you or someone else dropped it… Well, though luck.
It did. It broke like that. Yes, the phone have fallen before. But since its quite humid, the whole screen cracked.. its not a small scratch you know. Its the typical iphone issue that i never thaught will happen with my Jolla phone.
Wait… Humidity cracked the glass? Eh… Are you sure?
Having spent many years replacing many iPhone screens, I can tell you that it doesn’t take much to break them, but it does take *something*. I’ve heard of them breaking after falling from a bed onto a carpeted floor. Sure, that shouldn’t break it, but it did. Perhaps it was weakened by being dropped before to the point where finger pressure broke it?
You’ve never seen glass spontaneously break before? Its pretty cool, and terrifying. It happens on sky scrappers occasionally. The glass on them is constantly bombarded with small particles of dust, sand and gravel, the rest of the building is contracting and expanding, it all just weakens the glass a little at a time. Then all of a sudden something happens to send it over a critical threshold and it all shatters without an obvious immediate cause.
Having said that, I’ve never seen it happen on a smart phone. But I don’t doubt that it could. What kind of glass is in the Jolla? Is it a name brand like Gorilla? or a knock off?
Yep, in their specs they are declaring is Gorilla 2 (TM) Glass.
Well, I can’t really blame Jolla. As long as they aren’t doing anything crazy like pre-stressing the glass in the case.
I’ve only broken gorilla by hurling my phone on a curb. It was picking up a jacket it was laying on…. Long story short I no longer have a Galaxy S III.
I experienced this just after getting the Jolla but it did turn out to be 100% my fault; during an earlier sailfish update the screen turned black and I just assumed it was done so I turned off the phone…
Had to do a complete factory reset back to v1.0.0.x as no subsequent update fixed my issues with the system after that.
Not only we got this awesome update, but it seems that there is another one (“Update 8”) in the coming before the summer break (differently than previously planned), probably early July.
Folders in menu, yeah! \o/
Too bad, it’s not as goos as the n9.
In the n9, you see little icon, so you don’t have to read. Gui efficiency…..

When are we going to see the next build for Nexus 4?
Not all countries obviously – only those where carriers use supported frequencies. A lot of countries are left out because of the modem limitations.
This! I’m from EU originally, living in Canada now and I bought the phone on my trip back home. It works with 2G only on Rogers here, because of the frequencies.
I’d gladly pay some extra to get the networks here working properly but there’s no option and AFAIK they’re ignoring north america completely.
