“We’re almost exactly a year on from our first hands-on with the Nokia 808 PureView, hailed by me, somewhat tongue in cheek, as Nokia’s custom design for me, from my own personal checklist. Insane camera, Xenon flash, replaceable battery, FM transmitter, large OLED screen, deafening speaker, and so on. All present and correct. One year on and, thanks to a brace of updates and third party additions, I find myself just as in love with the 808 now as when I first popped my microSIM card in.” I’m back to my HTC 8X by now, since the Nokia E7‘s battery was terrible – 4-6 hours of mild use, tops, even with a brand new, official Nokia battery. My 8X gives me three days on the same usage pattern.
Reviewed some test of the photo-phone, the picture quality is… well… currently beyond unknown (7000×5000, 10 MB per JPG) and that’s in a smartphone. The biggest problem with this device : Symbian, ditched away by third parties for a long time now, and even by Nokia. If only there was a Android Jelly Bean custom ROM for it…

Thom, it’s your fault that I now own a brand new 808. When I read hour article about Symbian and the E7, that peaked my curiosity for legacy Nokia devices.
I didn’t grab an E7 at first. I found a new in box N8. Didn’t like some of the things, so I returned it and purchased a new in box 808.
It’s a brilliant device! I’m loving it and swapping sim cards back and forth with my Lumia 920.

Is the device “self” usable without a bunch of third parties applications ? Is it… complete ?

Yes it is pretty self sufficient. All I needed were Spotify, CameraPro, and a FLAC media player. All available in the Ovi store.
The rest is built in. This won’t fit all, but it fits me perfectly.
What about the camera responsiveness ? I mean, that’s a load of pixels for a 1 GHz single core ARM with only 512 MB of memory.

Not worse than any other smartphone. Only delay I’ve experienced (while playing with it in the shop) was SDCARD storage of full res images.
808 image pipeline is almost completely done in custom HW.
It’s an OS limitation as well. Symbian was able to handle the requirements to handle the PureView tech in the 808. Windows Phone 7 was not. No telling if WP 8 can or cannot.
Hardly anybody did, that was one of the problems Nokia had with it…
Weird, I got well over a day of battery life from E7 easily. It’s a good idea to kill tasks occasionally, as Symbian tends to leave stuff on background a bit too easily.
Shameless plug: if you are still on Symbian, try “QmlReddit” from Ovi store. Observant among you will probably guess it’s an app written in QML that reads reddit, by yours truly.
