We’ve already talked about Windows 8 so often you’d almost forget it had not yet been officially confirmed by Microsoft. Well, Steve Ballmer has announced that yes, it’s going to be called Windows 8, and yes, it’s going to arrive in 2012. “We’re obviously hard at work on the next version of Windows,” Ballmer said, “Windows 7 PCs will sell over 350 million units this year. We’ve done a lot in Windows 7 to improve customer satisfaction. We have a brand new user interface. We’ve added touch, and ink, and speech. And yet, as we look forward to the next generation of Windows systems, which will come out next year, there’s a whole lot more coming. As we progress through the year, you ought to expect to hear a lot about Windows 8. Windows 8 slates, tablets, PCs, a variety of different form factors.” Right-o. Update: A company spokesperson has retracted the statement, but whatever, we’re not stupid.
Someone at microsoft hates Ballmer. The ceo just said it at an official company event. You can’t take it back. All you can say is that the guy who said it is an idiot who said something he shouldn’t have. Who on earth would authorize a microsoft spokesperson to say that? If I were ceo, I’d fire everyone who touched that spokesman’s statement and stick their pc on a pike with their security badge hanging from it.
And after that I’d make them have a romantic dinner with George Bush.

I wish Microsoft would focus on making Windows Update work fine instead of focusing on UI changes no one is waiting for. I’ve seen it happen too many times that an update failed to install or that a Windows 7 system became unbootable because of a failed upgrade.

He did not say: Windows 8 is coming next year.
Next generation Windows systems does *not* mean Windows 8. That means new hardware.
It couldn’t be a coincidence….
