I’m looking for 100% FreeBSD compatibility. I’ll check out this version soon.
It’s just FreeBSD with a ready to go configuration and some utilities on top of FreeBSD tools. So nothing to worry about.
I happen to have tested 1.6-RC1 and really liked it.
I am using FreeBSD a lot, both as a server and also as a desktop, and DesktopBSD is practically FreeBSD+GUI in a quick easy install. Mostly for the times when you need a FreeBSD desktop as fast as possible. The graphics tools for ports and packages are very good as well.
In their site there is also some useful documentation and a wiki. In fact I used the instructions to install and configure CUPS from ports. It all worked out nicely.
Since the base system is FreeBSD you will be able to easily upgrade it (with freebsd-update) to 6.3-RELEASE when time comes. (1.6-RC1 was based on 6.2-STABLE and I moved it to 6.3-RC1 without trouble)
All in all I had a very positive experience with DesktopBSD.
