The OpenSUSE project has announced the development version SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta 6. Also, the revised released schedule for SUSE Linux 10.1 and the start of the SUSE Linux 10.2 schedule with eight months development have been posted. The project attended FOSDEM 2006 and the slides of the talks given there are now online (audio/video recordings will follow soon). Last but not least the preview phase of the openSUSE Build Service has started.
Wow, these guys don’t mess around. Very impressive and very open about who they are, what they do and how they work. If only SuSE could move to a better owner whose HQ wasn’t on another continent. Novell have just announced another set of unimpressive financial results which are only too likely to mean trouble at the top. Such a waste, with this much talent in the company.
Actually, Novell Corporate headquarters are in Waltham, Mass., w/ key facilities located in Provo, Utah and Nürmberg, Germany. Almost all of the major bigshots from the Ximian group live in and/or around North America.
And just what do you mean by “OTHER” continent? My understanding is that OpenSuSE is open, and is no longer bound by the location or success of any single entity. Yes, the product is supported by the fiscal earnings of NOVELL… but SuSE will always live on, regardless if NOVELL funds it or not.
I do appreciate all of the contributions that NOVELL has made. We’re moving forward so well b/c companies like NOVELL are realizing the true value of an open model…and are now more willing to make investments of time, money, and resources.
They’ve got my respect.

Time, money and resources which they cannot afford. The reason why Novell keep posting such poor results is because their fixed costs are too high, their existing products are declining in usage (and have been for some time), and culturally, they simply do not want to set sail and replace them with open source alternatives.

Imho, SuSE remains at heart a European company and Novell’s acquisition hasn’t changed that. You could argue that one of the issues still facing Novell is how to integrate SuSE without expiring from indigestion. As for the Ximian “bigshots”: I like SuSE despite them and not because of them. But … all this gets us away from the cental issue which is that the OpenSuSE beta program is very impressive.

I know some people don’t like to be told that, but it’s there in black and white.
My impression is that Novell still hasn’t matured as a Linux company quite yet. It took RH 5-8 years to really figure out how the company should work, and how to balance geek culture with corporate performance. Novell has to morph the whole company, while RH was OSS from the beginning. So I’m not surprised Novell is hitting some bumps. It’ll probably be a couple years before they are established and in the “zone”.
If only SuSE could move to a better owner whose HQ wasn’t on another continent.
Blame the seller not the buyer.
Blame the seller not the buyer.
Sellers, actually, of which SuSE wasn’t one.
So, you are saying Novell bought Suse w/o Suse knowledge?
Are you on crack?
Maybe he means the individual shareholders that sold all their shares to Novell?
Scanning old articles ( http://news.zdnet.com/2100-3513_22-5101680.html http://www.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/11/04/1332252 ), I’m having a hard time telling what role e-millenium, Apax and AdAstra played (not to mention IBM and Intel). Moleskine might not be too far off.
Interesting from those articles though is stuff like We expect many SuSE executives will remain and continue their work with SuSE Linux as a part of the Novell management team ** through its relationships with Conectiva and Turbolinux, SUSE LINUX has been a leader in Latin America and Asia, as well
Fast forward: A lot of Suse execs have left, and Mandrake buys Conectiva. Things haven’t gone exactly as some of us expected back then.
SuSE was sold by its shareholders, like any other company. A massive shareholder was a VC outfit, looking for an “exit” and a return on their stake, one presumes. Novell at the time were desperate to buy their way out of what looked like impending doom and the argument was that a lil’ old European software house as SuSE then was had to break into the American market or go phut. I guess the jury is out on all of that pending Novell straightening itself out.
“SuSE was sold by its shareholders”
SUSE whas a privately owned company.
“A massive shareholder was a VC outfit”
IBM is not a VC outfit.
“looking for an “exit” and a return on their stake, one presumes.”
They just wanted someone else to pay to keep them alive. They dont whant just one big and significant player in GNU/Linux.
“Novell at the time were desperate to buy their way out of what looked like impending doom”
Someone give you a brand new car of your dream worth 500k for 10 000$ dollars , would you take it ? Novell whas not doomed.
“and the argument … or go phut.”
No the price asked whas really great and they took a chance on what they believed and where lied about and the propaganda that SUSE whas the #2 GNU/Linux profitable commercial company in the world.
“I guess the jury is out on all of that pending Novell straightening itself out.”
Its SUSE which is bleeding the most money.
SUSE whas a privately owned company.
IBM is not a VC outfit.

Are you a troll of some kind? If you aren’t, then if you don’t much mind my saying so, you give every impression of not knowing what you are talking about. Privately owned companies can have shareholders just like public ones. IBM was not the outfit I was referring to. The rest of your post is either completely wrong or pure conjecture.
This thread started with the impressive nature of the OpenSuSE beta program. Feel free to have the last word, but mine is that their program looks extremely good.
Learn what a troll is , its not what you currently think it is. When you know the difference between a shareolders ( those that own shares of stock traded on the stock market ) and parts onwership , then business 101 will be in your reach. I know IBM is not who you where refering to , but you where wrong , IBM whas the biggest part owner and investor. Good you decided to keep your lies to a minimum.
“This thread started with the impressive nature of the OpenSuSE beta program.”
your sick and senil too ?

“Feel free to have the last word”
last word ? This is history and facts.
“but mine is that their program looks extremely good.”
yes , I agree on that last addition , but too bad they dont sell enough of it.
Wow, these guys don’t mess around. Very impressive and very open about who they are, what they do and how they work.
Thats Novell. SUSE whas closed , private and without to much direction , but with incredible european coder.
“If only SuSE could move to a better owner whose HQ wasn’t on another continent.”
It whas in Europe and whent Bankrupt even after IBM kept them on life support.Where the HQ is mean nothing at all , its sales and profit that mather.
“Novell have just announced another set of unimpressive financial results which are only too likely to mean trouble at the top.”
SUSE aint pulling its weight but eating tons of R&D money.
“Such a waste, with this much talent in the company.”
Talent is meaningless , when the best product dont sale at the other end.
It whas in Europe and whent Bankrupt even after IBM kept them on life support.
Hmmm, no they didn’t. Suse went through a difficult period that all young companies of that size go through and they got through it. IBM has long been a partner of Suse, and managed to smooth the Novell and Suse deal because it was mutually beneficial to them – being partners to both.
Don’t try and pretend that Suse was in the kind of trouble that Novell is in now. They weren’t, and would have been far better off without the milestone of Novell around their necks.
SUSE aint pulling its weight but eating tons of R&D money.
Wrong. It’s not Suse but Novell and the other side of the company that’s eating R & D money.
Keep bulshitting yourself.
If the strategy work and you make money you dont change the guy in charge :

“The executive acknowledged that Novell’s Linux and open source business has grown slowly since the acquisition of SUSE Linux several years ago but he is confident that the company – and its channel partners – are sitting on a gold mine.”
have a nice day.
Keep bulshitting yourself.
For someone who thinks I’m bullshitting myself, you believe an awful lot of bullshit yourself.
If the strategy work and you make money you dont change the guy in charge :
Hmmmm. Well that’s sort of my point. It isn’t working, and it’s their strategy and direction that’s wrong. Changing people and rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic’s quarter deck isn’t really going to make too much difference.

“The executive acknowledged that Novell’s Linux and open source business has grown slowly since the acquisition of SUSE Linux several years ago but he is confident that the company – and its channel partners – are sitting on a gold mine.”
Well that’s a really lovely article and all, putting Novell in a positive light, but articles and appointments don’t make your financial figures any better. Besides, if they’re sitting on a goldmine they’ve made a pretty poor attempt at locating it thus far, wouldn’t you say?
I’m sure when a new appointment is made at any company like Novell, with a lovely salary and benefits, they new boy is going try and be as positive (read, bullshit) as possible about his new role and about his new employer.

I like Suse, it rocks and i will be buying 10.1 without any hesitation.
But i do questions SUSE/Novel’s comittment to KDE, and i reckon we’ll see the truth of this when 10.2 arrives.
With SUSE 10.2 Alpha6 arriving on Oct 5th 2006, about the same time as the preview of KDE4, it does become possible that SUSE 10.2 could include KDE4 if they SUSE release in early 2007 as they have said is possible. If KDE4 is set for release in January 2007 and SUSE 10.2 shoots out the door in December 2006 (as they have also said is possible) then I think my time with SUSE will have ended. I do appreciate that KDE4 could be delayed beyond very early 2007 thus making its inclusion in 10.2 impossible, in which case I shall withhold judgement.
We shall wait and see………………………..

KDE4 doesn’t even have a release schedule yet and you’re blaming openSUSE for not following it.
10.2 will most likely ship KDE3 as the default KDE version. Development on 10.2 starts real soon now and KDE4 still doesn’t have an alpha release.
Regardless, KDE4 will most likely be available (and installed in /opt/kde4, so you’ll be able to keep both versions installed).
These questions are for those beta testing SUSE Linux 10.1. Please clarify if there is any real improvement whether performance, stability, etc that warrents an upgrade from version 10 to version 10.1? Also I’m curious about Gnome in SUSE Linux 10.1 how it’s functionality is whether improved or not? I heard that Novell was attempting to make their Gnome/Ximian blend more KDE like so as to be more user friendly for those migrating either from KDE or from Windows desktop GUI. While I realize the final release is not out I’m wondering if anyone has done benchmarks on 64-bit (AMD/Intel) systems?

wrong on both counts.
the preview for KDE4 is due in Oct 2006.
the full alpha release schedule for 10.2 has been posted.
final release for 10.2 is quoted as end-06 <> early-07.
rock on junior.
