The third release candidate of FreeBSD 5.4 is now available for testing. Also, due to one major issue that crops up on large (4-processor) systems
under heavy load that is still being debugged there will be at least one more RC added to the schedule. Timing for the extra RC and the new Release date have not been set yet.
4 CPUs? Pfft, my cell phone has 4 CPUs. Get with the program!
๐
In all seriousness, though, I think I might finally upgrade from 4.x when 5.4 comes out …
yes!!! almost time for me to upgrade my two 4.x servers to the 5.x platform.
They are having problems with quad cpu machines but is there any word on weather the problems get worse on larger machines ? also information about how well the new 5 tree is scaling on large systems.
works like a charm
waiting for final release. and I hope they fix that quad CPU.
I am having major PPP problems with 5.3. Maybe 5.4 will improve this situation. And maybe not…
i wonder if there will be issues with dual cpus each of which has hyperthreading?
I dont think there is any ongoing work on the ppp stuff.

Not good yet, unfortunately.

I believe so, yes.
i had problems with pppoe when freebsd 5.x was not stable yet, but im running ppp in pppoe mode since freebsd 5.3 and never had problems anymore… ok, my k6-2 based router is eating up many cpu cycles doing “nat”, but thats not new anyway… ๐
NOOOOOOOOO!

Obligatory comment on unfornate lack of new scheduler.

No SCHED_ULE
It’s there! They just didn’t update the todo list. Major fixes was MFCd at the end of january and beginning of february. I’ve been using it since then on both my server and my desktop machine with options PREEMPTION (that has been causing most of the issues previously) enabled in the kernel, I didn’t have any issues yet. Even without preemption, especially on the desktop, ULE outperforms the old scheduler – so you might want to give it a try ))
I found this in february: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-stable/2005-February/011…
Looks promising
i have ctwm and xfce4 working in 5.4rc2. mplayer is installed and can view my pbs newshour strem. But I can not get linuxflashplayerplugin7 to work with firefox. Please fix this as I would like to view my “msnbc pictures of the week” without going to ubuntu. who needs to go to winxp anymore. ๐ Just kidding, winxp works as a great backup.
Hay, It’s cool. I bet flash7 works in mozilla.
Everything in the ports has nothing to do with FreeBSD x.y
If it’s not in the world, go bother the port maintainer instead of the FreeBSD core team.
Or submit a diff with send-pr and inform the maintainer.. ๐
That’s odd, it works for me just fine…
This page http://www.freebsd.org/releases/5.4R/todo.html talks about REAL cpus, so I guess 2 HT-enabled CPUs are not affected by this issue.
We’re going to have Scott Long, one of the core developers of FreeBSD on the The Linux Link Tech Show tommorow night:

Are you trying to run the Linux plug-in with the FreeBSD version of Firefox? This could be causing the problem, the Linux Firefox should work fine under binary emulation, try that. (I don’t use FreeBSD much, but thought I might suggest this).
Ok, the GPL version of flash is covered in the handbook on how to get it fuctional. Otherwise if your using the Macromedia version of flash, you have to use the Linux port of FF/Moz to get it to work. Well, that is how I got it working. There might be another way on getting it to work.
Sorry, not infront of my BSD box to give you a walk through.
If you install flashpluginwrapper (/usr/ports/www/flashpluginwrapper), then you can run the Linux flash plugin with FreeBSD-native Mozilla or Firefox.
rycamor- I have tried the flashpluginwrapper but it has notes in the Makefile regarding the use of flash7. The flash6 that it does install will not work with some flashing pop up windows. I quess I could tweak the Makefile to work with flash7.
Anonymous- I am starting to think you are correct. I had it all working in freebsd5.3 and I bet I had the linux-firefox installed at that time, possibly because bsd version of firefox was broken. Thanks, I had forgotten about the various versions.
Buck- see Anonymous above. are you using linux-firefox?
Jave and dennis- thanks. I should be doing more correspondance with the appropriate people but time keeps on slippin’. these little notes are about all i have time for.
flashpluginwrapper is deprecated. Please use linuxpluginwrapper.
OK, at least with 5.3, you can get Flash 7 working just fine. Here is what I did:
1. install a recent Linux compat package (I used /usr/ports/emulaturs/linux_base-rh-9/ after deleting my linux_base7 packages with “pkg_delete -f”)
2. install /usr/ports/www/linux-flashplugin7/
3. edit Makefile in /usr/ports/www/linuxpluginwrapper to change all references to linux-flashplugin6 to linux-flashplugin7.
4. make install clean in /usr/ports/www/linuxpluginwrapper (actually, I installed the package with portinstall -P)
5. make sure linux_enable=”YES” is in /etc/rc.conf
6. cp /usr/local/share/examples/linuxpluginwrapper/libmap.conf-FreeBSD5-stab le to /etc/libmap.conf
7. restart computer.
thank you rycamor. your notes look familiar. will check it out tonight.
in addition to ctwm and fxce4 I have after rc3 installed fluxbox. starting flux with xdm; figured i would put xdm to work.
I applied the edits to linuxpluginwrapper Makefile as suggested by rycamor above.
realplayer requires linux_base8 as linux_basse-rh9 will result in executive failure of realplay at the command line.
After reinstalling the linux_base8 I took firefox to ifilm.com and the flash most certainly appears to be working. the realplayer links at ifilm will dump/close firefox. (realplay continues to operate singularly at the command line though).
mplayer handled ifilm in both linux8 and linux9 emulation. flash also works in both. realplay just got advanced to 10.0.4 and is most likely the bug in this soup.
Anyway, looks like 5.4 handles my multimedia
benchmark, certainly by the time of 5.4 release. All exept openvrml, like active worlds. at this point it seems that openvrml may be the only reason I have to use the winxp distro.
lets us have a 2.6 of electric sheep. Mr Draves, are you listening. Electricsheep is the Best screensaver going. It has advanced rapidly in the last several months with the 2.6 beta creating some of the most beautiful kaliedescopic psychedelic imagery I have ever seen. 2.5 stable will suit any ones needs butthe colors are not as deep/saturated/?.
